Mayer was very inconsistent and didn't live up to his potential, but, Christ on a cracker, he's the scapegoat for a lot of fans. FWLIW, I think there's plenty of blame to go around.

Really interested to see which '24s are prioritized. Also, does anyone else feel that Fears may reclass to '24?
I still don't get all the Mayer hate. He definitely was inconsistent and didn't play up to his potential but he was still the 2nd best player on the team and single handedly won multiple games.

Mayer was fundamentally asked to do too much because of the flawed roster surrounding him. He was a stretch 4 that ballhandling role and expected to be a focal point of the offense. Play him with an actual point guard and some shooters and he would be way more effective. He actually was shooting pretty well from 3 until he went ice cold down the stretch.

This will probably be controversial here but I think there is a decent chance he could end up having the best NBA career out of him, Hawkins, and Shannon. He's a good athlete capable of guarding multiple positions, good shot blocker, and a capable spot up shooter which is basically an ideal role player in the modern NBA.

Bolded = wouldn't be surprised necessarily, though that might reflect more on confidence in the other two than in Mayer.

Mayer came here wanting a larger, more featured role, something that Scott Drew wasn't giving him (hindsight tells a lot in that regard). He got a featured role with more ballhandling, and yet, despite being an old hat, had a top 3 bad attitude on the team. No way you watched that Arkansas game and could say his performance was anything other than him checking out early. This board (and any fan) will get frustrated if a guy can't hit shots, particularly if they're a shooter, but the Mayer hate is b/c he didn't try unless he hit some shots. People knock(ed) DMW's shooting all the time, but that dude was beloved b/c he played his a** off regardless of whether his shots were going in or not.

This sequence tells you everything you need to know about MM. Biggest game of the season too

Speaking for myself only, it’s probably because we all care enough about Illini hoops to be spending time on this board in the middle of June when there really isn’t too much going on.

MM seemed too casual about the entire situation where he seemed less invested in the Illini program than a bunch of yahoos posting on a message board.

I think fans across college sports are gonna struggle with this in the NIL/free transfer era.

Both Fears and Gill in 25 I expect to be Illini

Long way to go. Pretty much have to get someone like Gill.

That would be one heck of a backcourt. Assuming Hansberry and Johnson are on the team that make for a pretty impressive sounding core

Looks like our recruiting staff may have to travel a little farther than upstate to check out young Mr. Fears this fall.

This kid and entire family is a BIG pass for me …

Jeremiah was heading to Sunrise … Now all of a sudden is heading out to Compa$$ prep … I’ve seen this story way too many times … Kid is talented but not talented enough to deal with the headache … At least for me …

Wildcats GIF by Arizona Men's Basketball

Would I take him ? In a heartbeat … He solves our problems …

Would Brad take him ? I don’t think he would based off what I’ve gathered … But he’s pondering it …

I have 2 but they’re not very talented and only occasionally worth the headache.
