I’ll add two more cons:

1. Tepid support (fans, donors, university itself, etc.) for athletics.
2. Very low ceiling for picking up bandwagon fans when they’re rolling … doesn’t matter where they are geographically, “Average Joes” tend to adopt a state school way before an elite private one.

NU has some massive donors, but the problem is that Evanston is a town that isn't very in to college football. Most of the place hates loud noises at night and yells at clouds.

Yeah, that’s what I was trying to say. I’m not saying there aren’t huge donors (their endowment is massive), but the money has never really flowed toward athletics.

I’ve seen it mentioned several times in this thread, but am not sure what the source is. Do we know that NW isn’t going to participate in the the NIL world? Why wouldn’t they? It’s legal, and while they have a small alumni base (I would guess smallest in the conference) there are a sizable number of wealthier alums.

Academic requirements and NIL tend to butt heads.

If there is a flicker of a bright side, whomever decides to accept the full time job as football head coach, he could possibly be heralded as a savior and a walker on water (assuming icing over on Lake Michigan). Just win 6 games and that will really help. One wonders, having been around a BiG FB program, what take the coach will have on running the team. Be a hardass? A yeller and screamer? Impose Lombardi-esque discipline? Perhaps be more moderate use other methods to motivate? What to do with the upperclassmen ringleaders. Will they have their tails between their legs? What will the majority of the team think of these guys this season?

Eh, I think this is a bit overstated. Evanston itself tends to support the high school more as the college is somewhat thought of as a separate entity (which it is), but since the Gary Barnett era, I'd say the greater northern Chicagoland era would support/rally around the Wildcats for football when they were doing well. At least it always felt there was more of a buzz there for them than anything Illini football related (in fairness, we haven't had much to get buzz for). Northern Chicago has been a Northwestern Football and Illini basketball supporter area for at least the past 30 years from what I recall, but this incident could certainly change things.

Why would you love seeing them in trouble? of all the big ten schools I would love to see in trouble, the least one would be NU. Put Iowa on top.
Purdue
everyone else with NU last. They are no threat to us.
Good point. Mostly general principles. Arrogance.

But you are correct that I'd place others much higher on my list of wishing troubles on. Purdue definitely doesn't make my list. Iowa occupies the first three spots.

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer

Just fill your basket full of sandwiches and weenies
Then lock the house up, now you're set
And on the beach you'll see the girls in their bikinis
As cute as ever but they never get 'em wet
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer
Don't have to tell a girl and fella about a drive-in
Are some romantic movie scene
Right from the moment that those lovers start arrivin'
You'll see more kissin' in the car than on the screen
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here

You'll wish that summer could always be here

He'll be working for ESPN by the end of the summer.
I think he's toxic for a year
He would be wise to take the year off and try to get a gig in a pro level league next year , if he wants to coach again.
can he rehab somewhere in 2024 and then get back into D1 down the road at a place like USF or Tulane ? maybe

If Naked and Afraid can generate an audience, Fitz should shop Naked Slingshots and shower related content to networks and streaming services.

Can we now make sure the Big 10 Linebacker of the year is no longer named after him?

it really never should have been the Butkus-Fitzgerald award in the first place. It always bugged me.

There are so many more deserving linebackers than Fitzgerald. I can even name a number of Illini more deserving like Dana Howard, Kevin Hardy, John Holecek.

Everything but the kitchen sink . . .

Hardcore racism charged
Im no closeted nor an outed fan of Fitz. I think he was a jerk towards us

But I dont think he was racist. for every disgruntled former player o fhis who thinks he was., my guess is there are 10 times more players who think the opposite

just my opinion. The race card against coaches is pulled out as often as the "he didnt let me play on the 1 or 2 deep' card
