Harmon quietly shot 39.7% on catch-and-shoot jumpers last season at Utah Valley.

Domask was much more efficient shooting off the catch (37.3%) than off the bounce (24.1%).

I've watched a ton of Domask since he was a freshman and he was there end of the shot clock bailout guy so he took too many step back and off the dribble 3s but he can shoot. Wouldn't be surprised to see him shoot 40+% from 3.

Little bit of Austin Reaves in his game though he won't have to carry the load like he did at Oklahoma. Reaves is a bit quicker but I think Domask is bigger and stronger also better in the post.

Maybe having a point guard who isn't always looking to score will help set up the shooters better.

This.
You're leaving out Harmon though and he can stroke it. Also was far better spotting up and shooting off the catch which he will do far more often at Illinois.

Goode basically didnt play last year so you're realistically adding Goode and Domask who would be the best two shooters on the team last year plus Harmon and Guerrier who would have been 4th and 5th behind Mayer
This. We will be a SIGNIFICANTLY better shooting team.

There is very little reason to take guys from 50-100 if they can't start right away or get the role they want. They will just transfer out after year 1. Get top guys that can play right away, get guys 100+ who commit knowing they will need to be developed and aren't expecting PT right away. Then steal other teams 50-100 ranked recruits that you CAN give the role they are looking for

C'mon, man. Butler is a 3-star. Obviously, no threat to Mikey's potential playing time. 😏
You can't base that soley on rankings. Hell I remember Kendall Gill was the lowest rated of the group and how did that turn out? 5th over all in the draft as I recall. Players also continue to grow and improve at different rates. Once they arrive all playing time will be earned. Not long ago Skyy, Epps, and Podz who got better are examples. Also others like in Gill's case when he surpassed other good players once he arrived.

To add to this point, ‘replacing’ RJ with Ty actually would have very slightly increased our percentage last year (about a half a percentage point) as RJ had 91 attempts (11% of team total) while Ty only took one shot from beyond the arc, despite RJ shooting 26% ‘better than’ Ty.

I don’t think one outlier from 40 years ago has a lot of relevance when it comes to modern day recruiting/rankings.

Ok, so some modern examples Steph Curry 3 star, Lillard was a 2 star, Frank Kaminsky, Trey Burke 3 star, Jimmy Butler 2 star, Paul George was outside the top 200, Oladipo was a 3 star, and there are many more that made the league and others were and are certainly were great college players. I used Gill as an example since I knew him. That said I trust the guys with million dollar contracts more than rivals or 247. These top coaches want to keep thier jobs and aren't concerned with these websites rankings. This still happens today. Also with not many players from overseas are listed and they are a ton of guys overseas that make an impact in college hoops not listed.

Yes.

The class is currently ranked 21st on 247.com and adding Jase Butler is not going to suddenly cause that number to plummet. Every team is taking on developmental pieces.

Of the teams in the top 10 recruiting classes on 247.com, over half of them have 3 stars, a few of them have multiple 3 stars, and many of those 3 stars are not close to sniffing the top 100 (guys ranked 134, 152, 192 and below, for instance).

Adding another 3 star does not remotely ruin anything, especially considering Jakstys is rising in the rankings and is close to top 100 as it is now. If our only criteria is to be top 100 then this class is not far from meeting some folk's needs of every recruit needing to be ranked 4 star or higher. Jakstys moves up 11 spots in the next set of rankings, then both our recruits are top 100, problem solved? Is that really the hair we're trying to split here?
FWIW, Add Jase Butler and Mikey Lewis to '24 class and would be currently top five based on the class calculator on 247.com. I know it isn't a "done deal" being already committed and signed, but the signs all seem pretty positive. Either way, we have been recruiting much better as of late as compared to the last coaching staff. Would love to land some consensus 5* guys, but I think that we are going to be fine. There are bunches of teams that have the right pieces rather than the biggest names, who do very well. On the flip side, the Dukes, UNCs, Kansas', and Kentuckys constantly have a plethora of 5* talent and they often under-achieve.

Man speaking of that it's a shame that RJ didn't work out.

I really thought he could be a special player. NBA caliber length and athleticism just couldn't get his shot to fall and he lacked any ball handling skills(could have been a good slasher on a better passing team). He also just rarely played with any confidence.
It is a shame that RJ didn't work out. He seemed to have all the tools. IMHO, he seemed to lack any kind of mental fortitude. He struck me as kind of soft and whiney when things weren't going his way.

Listen, I like to be an optimist, particularly on this board. But let's also be real -- we most definitely do not have any evidence that we got better at shooting this offseason.

I'd say the opposite (agreeing with you, disagreeing with the OP) --the Spain trip numbers were awful both 3pt and FT. While it's a small sample, I don't get why people dismiss them so easily or make statements to the contrary. I hope the shooting is better. Haven't seen reasons to think it will be, at least not yet.

Offensive players like RJ build confidence on the defensive end. He never understood that.

Well adding an 87 percent FT shooter in Domask certainly should help calm my end of game nerves if we can get him the ball when teams are gonna hack to send our guys to the FT line. He also has shot it better than most of guys last year did.

I think a lot of us are assuming Domask will help a lot (He did not play in Spain), and we've seen enough of Goode to know he is capable of shooting a lot better than he did on that trip.

these 4 have won 10 of the last 25 championships. that plethora of 5* talent won't get a win every year but this is hardly underachieving in a grander scheme.
