Illinois 88, Michigan 73 Postgame

#227
I don't feel like reading all of this and the previous post game thread, so I apologize if the following has already been discussed, AND I do not wish to be attacked as a "Debbie Downer" looking for flaws (I am not), but I am concerned about the sustainability of a 6 man rotation.

Someone in the pregame thread noted that if Coleman wore his black tights last night, we win. I want to amend that to CoHawk and Harmon. They can't take them off for the remainder of the season.

Harmon's learning to play some Bradball.

I guess my frustration is that Dain just isn't getting it. Its like he just ignores whatever the coaches are saying and does whatever. Coleman seems fine but sometimes it looks like Quincy is gassed and Dain being at least useable would help with that.
Hansberry has looked a little better than Dain, IMO. Hope his back gets better soon.
Dain suddenly playing better would be OK, too.

Balance. Balance. And more balance. And Alpha By Committee.

And I TOLD you that Hawkins has a good stroke from Three.

Nice win for the roundballers. NOW it’s time for Illini footballers do to the same thing to Michigan. Always and forever.

Gotta love how those Blue & Maize fans ‘packed’ the building. 100,000 fans crammed into a basketball aren... uh, what’s that? They didn’t have that many at the game last night? Well, maybe they packed a campus phone booth if there are still any over there.

No one is ever going to accuse Michigan as being a roundball state. (Hey, no disrespect to Motown. I know you’ve got some ballers over there).

I didn't see it mentioned here yet (my apology if it has,) but Coleman made the Illini record book with his 6 steals last night, coming in at a tie for 10th. Bruce Douglas has the record with 8, then with 7 are Douglas (4 times,) Kendall Gill (twice,) Kenny Battle, and Derek Harper.

The key is he's finally (after over 3 years!) taking good shots. Jacking up low-probability step-back 3s really lowers one's average.

It took him a while, but he finally is looking like the player many thought he could be.

I just want to talk about loud basketball arena's from last week. If you watched MSU/ Minn las t night or Rutgers/Wisc. You will really see what a loud arens is. The fans in MSUY stood and cheered and jumped for most of the game while Illinois students sit on their hands and yawn!

Douglas holds the school record for career steals at 324 over 130 games. That has stood for nearly 40 years. Second place is Dee Brown at 231. Only Aaron Craft has more steals in the B10 (337). Jacob Gilyard holds the NCAA record at 466 over 154 games. Douglas also holds the school record for career assists at 765.

Yes.

One of the contributors to taking good shots is being relaxed on the floor... not rushing things... not feeling pressured to generate offense... letting the game come to you. Let your offense come organically from your teammates and your own getting into the flow and to your right spots on the floor. And then being relaxed with a natural shot release and a confidence that it’s going in. At times he was lacking these elements.

In many of Hawkins prior bad looks from Three he was looking rushed and unnatural. Lately, he’s showing what he truly has from distance. Just in time for... The Association (The League, not the 60s music group).

For Illini fans and Hawkins... 'Cherish' is the word.

Among many highlight-reel CoHawk clips last night, this was my early favorite, the ridiculously-long, step-back three where both his feet are in the midcourt "M" when he shoots. He clearly was enjoying himself on the court last evening.

In fairness to Dain, it took over 3 years for Coleman to get what the coaches were saying along with doing the same. Dain is in a funk, support the guy.

No Coleman always followed the game plan, he just occasionally made some bad decisions. Dain just doesn't follow the game plan.

Not sure how you can deduce that about Coleman? Dain is intentionally not following the gameplan? Or is having trouble executing the gameplan right now? Big difference between the 2

Dain is in a weird position where he needs more court time to work through his defensive issues but we can't keep him on the court long enough because it absolutely kills us. So he sits and doesn't improve, and can't play unless he improves. I love his skill set, but his defense has regressed and his offense is one dimensional.

Fun Fact

Illinois is one of only five teams to have won four games in a row at Crisler Arena since it opened in 1967. No one has ever won five games in a row there, so we have a goal for next year. Illinois can also become the first team to win four games in a row at the Kohl Center later this year. Ohio State and Illinois have each won 3 in a row there. Let's keep these ROAD WARRIOR streaks going!
