Tough for incoming players who are not top 25 who don’t accept a role where they will spend time behind high level transfers. Most top programs will have to show it‘s worth taking a back seat learning and playing everyday against the best to grow their game and find players willing to accept it.

We're just openly dragging our signed recruits through the mud now?

Towards the end of the season when teams like Purdue and UConn didn't guard him he didn't play 22 minutes a game and was a liability and kept bigs under the hoop. He played 8 min vs UConn to start both halves and wasn't guarded. I am sure that plus minus was awful with Clingan standing down low. Purdue left him unguarded to so if you think that won't continue and is ok then I disagree. More teams with good coaches won't put the big on Ty and dare him to shoot and clog the lane. He has to at least shoot to some degree and he really hasn't attempted a shot from beyond 10 feet in 2 years. I'm not hating on Ty I'm pulling for him. He is passionate and works hard but I'm am sure BU when they chat will tell him he needs a mid range jumper to play as much as they want him too. If he can get a shot which I have my doubts he would be a stud.
In the eight minutes that Ty played we got killed. He did nothing to counter act the disadvantage we were giving up while he was on the floor.

The value for HS recruits to attend mid-tier programs has never been stronger. The NIL money for non-elite HSers is really limited. Going off the list of programs mentioned before, you can go to a Colorado State type of program and get 20 minutes as a freshman. If you're successful, you can then enter the portal and get offers from better programs because you're now a proven asset. If you start at the top programs but only get 5-6 minutes/game, you're unknown and likely at-risk of being over recruited.

It's amazing how quickly this stuff has changed - the entire 2021 class likely never happens in the current environment. Someone like RJ Melendez is the prototype of someone who should have went to a program like USF to "audition" for better programs through significant playing time as a freshman. That way instead of him coming to Illinois with zero or little NIL, he can play a ton at USF and then commit to a program like Illinois with NIL pay and a very clear understanding of his playing time and team role.

Him moving up the rankings and playing well lately has gone to his family's head.

We are the reason he was moved up in rankings and people started to notice him. First and only real P5 school on his offer list.

He wasn't going to get tick with us this year considering the incoming transfers and possibly a 5* guard. Just funny because we got him a few really good NIL deals.

DGL is light-years ahead of him right now.

I call the situation like it is or like I've heard it on good authority ... Just like I do with any situation ...

No reason to sugar coat it ... If I said nothing and he left, y'all would be whining that I didn't let y'all know ahead of time ... 🤷‍♂️ Can't have it both ways ...

We certainly didn't tell him to leave ... But this is the freaking U of I ... We ain't begging anyone to stay ... And we certainly ain't taking demands from a kid who's only P5 offer was us ...

I really like Jase's game but wanting a good amount of guaranteed playing time as an incoming freshman who's not even a top 50 recruit is insanity

Seems we have learned our lesson from previous situation(s). I'm not opposed to losing him if he is asking for guaranteed playing time. I won't say anything negative about the kid, but that's not the approach I want to see from incoming freshmen.

Possible hot take: Programs like Illinois should only be taking incoming freshman that are going to play in their first year or rare situations where the player's talent and commitment to the program makes them almost a lock as a long-term asset. Everything else should be filled by the portal/NIL.

partially true. but he went head to head against some pretty highly rated dudes, including Burries. his play had a lot to do with his rise too

Definitely a rational strategy. We may be doing that, actually. Things are evolving rapidly, and sure seems like this coaching staff is nimble.

well, yeah, because we know that there is no guaranteed playing time for anyone. Or so I've heard earlier in this thread.

well, this is pretty absurd. the reason to sugar coat it is to not have players names dragged through the mud. No one in the program or speaking with any sort of "insider" knowledge should give a d@mn about how the board reacts to anything. You sound like Bruce Weber.

So he's deserving of his ranking based on his play? Or he's not?

I get that we caught on first or much earlier than others. But the kid is who he is not because of us but because of what he's done on his own and with his own effort and commitment.

Right. Posters would be whining because you didn't call a high school kid soft, when in actuality you don't know a damned thing about the kid.
