Well, if you've been paying attention, this wasn't a huge surprise. It's going to take some time. Need to just keep getting games under our belt and learn how to play together.

A few things that, at this point, look to be weaknesses:
Defense - Just didn't have that dawg in us.
Decision making - Is this because lack of chemistry or lack of bball IQ? One is an easier fix than the other.
Dribbling - Too much of it from dudes who don't handle it well. That's the tradeoff sometimes when you get bigger. Again, gotta define roles.

And some things to build from:
The Europeans - Could have a really nice two man game with KJ and Tomi. Was particularly impressed by Tomi today.
DGL -Looks like he's made a nice sophomore leap and brings some much needed ball handling and dawg mentality.
Morez - Tough and not quite as raw as I expected.

I retract my beat the brakes off them comment.
Meant to say Brad will gain much video to beat the brakes off our guys. ;)
All will be well my fellow Illini. So much room for growth. Excited for the season.

Didn’t get to watch…was this more a “10 guys who’ve never played together” thing or an “uh oh, we’ve got some serious issues” thing?

kasparas is not enough ready to play to be a one and done. we overrated him coming in. might develop into the future, but not nearly that immediate impact freshman people were calling for.

much of the same for riley except it seemed like people were higher on kj.

We lost a lot last year to graduation and player movement. Don't cry though. We have Brad Frickin Daddy Pizza Hut Underwood! This team will come together! We will be fine and I expect that we will be ready come tourney time to make some noise. Really!

Sad Baby GIF

Slightly hot Ole Miss game takes:

KJ and Riley are talented but aren’t even close to being all big ten, let alone NBA ready. They are young kids who have a lot to figure out on both ends of the floor. Both played hero ball out there. They have a long way to go.

Dra is a dawg but he is undersized. He looks very improved and that’s great to see. But, if he’s the focal point of our offense, that isn’t ideal.

Humrichous has a nice stoke but he is gonna get cooked on defense all year. He’s certainly not a 5, small ball or otherwise.

Tomi looks great but is still ineligible at this time. If he’s not eligible… oh boy…

Rez showed great effort but he is extremely raw.

Tre White is Tre White. Kind of know what to expect at this point.

Ty Rogers is Ty Rogers. Kind of know what to expect at this point.

I feel like Kylan was the biggest disappointment. He was sloppy with the ball. I expected more from a veteran coming from a high major program. He needs to be our floor general but he’s turnover prone. He’s not even close to being an NBA prospect at this time.

I’m not expecting a ton from Booth or Davis. Today didn’t change that.

Brad has quite a tall order ahead of him getting this group to gel together. He has to figure it out quickly. The non-conference schedule is absolutely brutal this year.

Rotation will be interesting to me. Lots of good pieces that expect to play.. how will he handle 10-11 guys (obviously not everyone will play)

A bit of both but it’s definitely leaning towards us just needing more games under our belt

Its not us that's projecting KJ and Riley as lottery picks. Evidently the NBA guys dont know what they're looking at either.

With White being one of our older guys was hoping to see more from him. He and Hum left a lot to be desired at this point. Hopefully just a bad shooting night. Tre had some good plays late.

Enjoy the ride, it's Illini sports! There's gonna be false starts, bumpy roads, days in the ditch... but the vehicle still works.

Hopefully they’ll watch video of how they all stand around watching the ball handler like some teams in past years did. Gotta keep moving without the ball.
There was zero off ball movement which was a major contributor to the number of turnovers. All our pass were from guys moving, usually dribbling into another player (ours, theirs, or both) to players who were standing. Almost no post entery attempts either. The ball stayed high and in front of the basket for a large majority of the game with little side to side movement. Easy to defend that.
