I don't think Scheyer has underperformed, I think he has met expectations. Very few bad losses but also few big wins. He tends to lose to the best teams and beat everyone else.As others have also mentioned, Rutgers is a good example of this as well. Rutgers is basically a 2024-25 version of Pat Kennedy-era DePaul right now.
Pretty strong Tommy Amaker vibes from Scheyer.
I think Duke's problem is along the lines of what people are saying about Rutgers. They have stuck with the we're going to take all the best high school recruits approach. In the current environment, where those stud Fr are going up against 23 year olds. That will end after this year.
That said, I think Duke needs to get on board with the new transfer world. They pretty much only bring in transfers to be bench role players. With the way they recruit, if they bring in 3 or 4 top high school recruits and 2 or 3 of the top transfers, the amount of talent alone will be very hard to beat regardless who the coach is. Going the only Fr route is actually doubling damning, you have to go through their struggles and adjustments, and then they leave for the NBA because their talent level is so high, so you never get their best.
