The mascot debate/fandom thread

#26
it was right in front of us the entire time. (if we have to change from fighting illini, which i love as a nickname if the wwi origin is true. i am an alum and hated the chief, so delete this post if this causes the millionth debate about all this.)
Fighting Illini will not go away. No one with any credibility is calling for it.

Why not both? It can be done.
Losing Fighting Illini altogether would be silly for financial and sentimental reasons. But slowly introducing a tasteful, school relevant alternative is a thoughtful idea worth exploring.
You can go anywhere you want with the ghost concept or galloping ghost.
Only thing to fear is being associated with a certain southern hate group.

Keep the helmets. Thanks to "activists," the Chief will never be back in our (or, my) lifetime. The helmet can become the new symbol of one of the glory days of Illinois football, especially after today. No "activist" could ever reasonably mount a campaign against that unless he/she/it hated the University or football itself. Let "Red" walk the sidelines.

This seems like a great time to once again suggest the doughboy as a cool mascot for the Illini--waaay better than the dumb Kingfisher and directly ties in with the legacy she discusses in this video.

Circling back to the SFC atmosphere.. Is it just me or does it seem like the band has much less engagement during games than it used to? Feels like every dead ball situation is defaulted to some sort of PA music or STAND UP AND SHOUT noise being blown at us. I miss the War Chant.. Got the juices flowing more than any PA noise ever has. Unfortunately, just another example of making the games more about money/donors than the students.
The school doesn't know what to do because our athletic program's culture is centered around a "problematic" mascot/team name and my conspiracy theory is they've been trying to phase it all out but the fanbase is too stubborn. If they had their way we'd be the Squirrels by now.

I recognize the Chief is not coming back. We certainly don’t need this nonsense:

#nomascotisfine.

Further, if they were to get this officially endorsed, look for the next boot to drop - our nickname should match.

So why do we need a made up, dorky mascot?

No way! I just couldn’t embrace a goofy bird. Bring back our Chief? Kansas City is fine with it and it seems the hypersensitive PC tide is receding lately. Why not just let the majority choose without anyone having a veto?

That bird will never happen.

Heck the Chief returning is 1000 times more likely. Heck the mascot will be a Gila Monster, Capybara, or Scorpion from Mortal Kombat before it will be that dang bird!

We don't need a new name. One of our US senators is a Fighting Illini. Illinois National Guard. Fly a Blackhawk drone around sporting events. There's the mascot. Honor Tammy Duckworth the first time it's announced and a guard and other service member at half times etc.

Chief Petty Officer occasionally for those who can't give it up.

I assume its being promoted by whoever owns the trademark, but I'm not sufficiently intrigued to look.

The kingfisher is a remarkable bird, unique, handsome, fun to watch at local streams and gentle rivers like the Kishwaukee near me.

Please, let's leave it this way.

We don't need no stinking mascots. Stop the kid stuff.

When I get the hunger for a cheeseburger or a filet-o-fish at The Golden Arches, do I immediately think of Ronald McDonald?

I should hope not at my advanced age.

But I got a taste for a Happy Meal right now. It's 9:30 a.m. Too early? What prize is included?

Illini: beat Duke.
