IU fans might not be impressed (are they ever?) but this would be a good hire for where IU is currently at as a program imo.

IU fans will be livid …

They expected Brad Stevens …

No deal in place for Brownell as of now but that’s the way it’s trending and he’s been the dark horse for a while as I’ve stated on here before …

I think McCollum has his eyes on other jobs and his interest level in Indiana is less than what the public thinks … If other things fall through, he could circle back …

IU did engage with Beard last week and decided not to pursue further after there was a disagreement on some things is what I got told …

I expected to date Scarlett Johansson and Charlize Theron simultaneously once upon a time (/s) , and that was only slightly less realistic than this expectation from IU fans.

If they expected Brad Stevens, maybe Leal can sell them some Indiana Oceanfront property here soon.

Brad Stevens has one of the best jobs in basketball. Not only in terms of pay, prestige, and history, but they are also competing for titles right now. Why in the world would he want to travel around cornfields 12 months a year to recruit 16 and 17-year-olds again?

They’re the most delusional fan base in CBB …
A lot of Indiana fans are living in a world where their last national championship wasn’t nearly four decades ago. For comparison, IU thumping their chests about their accomplishments is like CCNY, San Francisco and Texas Western doing the same thing the year IU hung its last banner. Just stories from grandpa to today’s recruits.

I want to be sure I understand the nuances of your positions. You've said several times that Brad will never win a natty for Illinois, and so he must go. Now, you say Texas is not good enough for him. Is there an in-between destination that you have in mind for him?
pretzel logic

I'm not trying to downplay what Brad Stevens does as president/GM of the Celtics, as I'm sure he does work hard for his excellent compensation. But I'd have to think he has something much closer to "regular hours" than what he would have as a coach at either the NBA or college level. I cannot imagine he'd ever want to return to the grind of film study, etc. as a coach compared to that of a front office executive.

With this in mind, I'm really curious how many hours a week P4 college football and basketball coaches work. Is it 60+? Or even more than that?

Depends on the coach … I can tell you Bret pushes 100 hours a week especially during the season …

I’d put Brad right at about 80 - 90 especially during the season …

The good thing about technology is that a lot of these guys can work from home when doing film and stuff … Sit in a Teams or Zoom meeting with other coaches … Still get to put their kids to sleep, have a meal with their family, go on a walk with their wife, etc …

I mean, if you consider me watching games on the couch a coaching for there (which I do), I've gotta be pushing that too! I'm just missing my check :ROFLMAO:

I still see Brad walking around Hessel Park from time to time. Good on him.

There is zero doubt in my mind that Bill Self never handed money to a player when such payments were theoretically illegal.

There is also zero doubt in my mind that Bill Self knew which players were being paid and a reasonable approximation of how much when such payments were theoretically illegal.

(Why yes, I have family members who are engaged in the legal profession for thelr livings!! :D )
I don't understand the "theoretically" part.

NCAA rules were supposed to make these payments illegal, but if you generated enough TV ratings and licensing revenue you were given a pass on any sort of enforcement. Hence, they were theoretically illegal but had a number of programs where it was accepted to do so.

The case that Stevens is a better hire than Brownell is extremely unconvincing if you have any sophistication about this stuff. Stevens' coaching achievements don't translate to the needs of IU at all.

Brownell might be a low-key fantastic hire. That's a guy who has survived with no resources relative to his competition on pure coaching and has broken through to higher territory as soon as he entered the new transfer-heavy world.

What IU needs most of all is someone to translate their resources into a functional college basketball team, as Crean, Miller and Woodson have all failed to do for different reasons. Brownell fits the bill.

What jobs do you think McCollum has his eyes on? I assume Iowa is one.

Yes. But he works for Brad. And Brad could tell him to sit down.
And Brad would be an idiot for doing that. Forget basketball, as an employee in the private sector, if you're not looking around and at least dipping your toes in the water of other companies, you're not doing yourself any favors. You should ALWAYS have your employer know your market value. Things happen over time. We have fans on here that wanted him fired just three weeks ago. Who's to say his employer doesn't put that heat on?

Kentucky fans turned on Cal and he only brought in amazing talent, won a national championship and were consistently in the top 10. That wasn't enough for that clown show of a fanbase. It happens.

Always keep your options open and know what others think of you. Should things ever go sour, it's just a matter of a couple of phone calls.
