Add on the fact that he disrespected Kofi on the way out and thinks he’ll be better than him? I don’t want him anywhere near our program. Just reeks of the Adam miller situation

Rumors are rumors. What we KNOW, though, is that Underwood has had a very high level of roster turnover at Illinois. All sorts of reasons for that. But it is a very high level of turnover, and turnover interferes with team success. He needs to fix this, now. I hope Whitman asks him for a plan to do better in exactly this regard.

And when I say "asks" I might mean just a little bit sharper than that. This is Illinois basketball, treat it like the gem it is.

I'm trying to prhase this right so correct me if I'm wrong ...So Morez is transferring because he didn't start right away his freshman year? Some are claiming it wasn't about money...So that's all it comes down to is how he was used this year? Should he have started over ben? Yes of course. But he also saw more playing time as the season went along then he broke his wrist. It's really just about feeling he should have been a "starter"? I mean I guess I get it but him and his circle are really so upset about this year that no promises as far as $$$ and starting going forward is enough? That seems over the top IMO

Agreed!! I really grew to like Morez and rooted for him , but jeez did he underwhelm in my book. Expected a lot more from a player as physically developed as Morez who was Mr. Basketball in Illinois. Dainja is significantly more skilled - great footwork, moves, passing and motor. He just can’t dunk as well. I will miss Morez bc I liked him, but not an irreplaceable loss.
Remember that Morez was a true 18 year old freshmen. Queen was 19-20 year old freshmen. Dain had to get weight control and develop over 3-4 years. Morez going to have the sophomore leap, hope he goes to BYU and we don't play them.

According to Morez himself, he is leaving because he is “more than a rim runner and rebounder and wants to get more than just that” he also said he didn’t want to end up like Kofi. Essentially sounds like he think of himself much higher than anyone else does

It is about being valued. Money is one grubby way to show that. There are other ways: Painter and Izzo in our conference seem to have figured that out. So has our football coach. Our basketball coach? Work in progress.

This type of BS is going to destroy college basketball.

College was always different from pro sports. You didn't have the constantly changing rosters. You were able to say I've got 4 years to watch these guys develop. I can get excited about next year because this guy(s) will take the next step.

Let's be honest, the quality of play in college basketball is FAR below that of the NBA. If you take away the aspect of watching a team develop, what's left? You better hope your team has enough NIL to buy a good roster every year. But we've seen it, Kansas has seen it, and many others, when you are out there fighting for guys trying to scrape out every possible penny, it is not uncommon to end up with a locker room problems, and its not possible to run and advanced system when everyone is new. It leads to a lesser product across the board.
Not to mention that you could spend 3 years doing everything to keep a player on the roster and develop him into a great player and then he or someone in his circle decides they can get a better deal somewhere else and they transfer out.

I think Morez is more than a rim runner and rebounder too, along the lines that I've posted here repeatedly (jump hooks, elbow jumpers). So do others. If he left because he felt the plan for his development in CU was inadequate, I am going to be even more disappointed in our coaching staff.

This isn’t just about money … This whole thing started WAY before this week …

Morez has been committed since he was freaking 16 basically … He gets here and you freaking start Ben Hum Brick House over him ???? UNACCEPTABLE …

It’s not like we’re talking about Domask here … Ben brings absolutely nothing to the table … He’s not a Big Ten player … Yet Brad continued to trot him out there … DUMB …

This crap is on Brad
So, you and just about everyone else thinks we should have started 4 freshman this year? You are nuts!! Will Riley in my opinion has a higher upside than KJ. Will was the highest rated recruit we have had in 20 years and he could not start early on. It takes time to develop freshman players, let alone have them all on the floor at one time on the road in a hostile big 10 environment. I dare to say he could not have started for any of the other Big Ten teams that finished above us this year. Morez is a nice player and I wish he was staying, but I don't think he is worth the hype everyone is giving this.

Instead of complaining about the new rules, we could ask the question, "Why is this such an issue with us and not with teams like Purdue?" Could it be that the problem is our coach and his staff?

Can someone explain how Purdue manages to retain all of their rotation players year over year, while we struggle to keep ANY of our contributors?
They give their guys some sort of personality test. Then they recruit kids that score high for commitment and loyalty. Something like that.

Is the system to be blamed for the transfer portal madness, or is it the team and/or coaching staff, or both? We have seen a number of our top players leaving last few years, but teams like Purdue and MSU are able to retain majority of their top players and the continuity is translating into success.

One hesitates to ask, but: what kind of nuts? Peanuts, cashews or walnuts?

After that snarky note, how about this: we need to win a lot more games. Underwood is struggling to reach the level he repeatedly says he wants to reach: championships. Freshman, seniors, whatever. Just win. That might take more than a season, I think.

Hypothetically- TA gets in the parents and players ear that “all they are offering you is a starting role and $1M?” I know a school that can get you double that and remember how they disrespected you but not starting you right away?

Kid enters the portal and goes to a bad big east school, doesn’t really get $2M that was promised, starts for a bad team and becomes irrelevant in college basketball- the money dries up the following year and he doesn’t get offered anything close to that his jr and sr years and isn’t on NBA radars - and career ruined

I’m saying, I hope that doesn’t happen- I’m a fan of Morez and want him to succeed. But I was responding to the Ant Wright tweet who is pretty connected
Lol that ain’t happenin’, brother.

This is gonna sound like blasphemy against the prevailing narrative against Ben on this board.

Here's the uncomfortable fact: Brad didn't take minutes from Ben and give it to Morez, because Morez just wasn't good enough to take those minutes.

Sure Morez is more athletic, a much better rebounder and overall has a higher ceiling than Ben.

And yes Ben has a lot of limitations and underperformed his expectation, especially shooting wise.

But people seem to have a revisionist view regarding how good Morez's defense was vs. Ben's. The fact is, despite all his flaws Ben was actually less lost on defense than Morez was and was just less foul prone (hence was able to be a body on the floor for longer), for a bug chunk of the season.
