While it seems we are missing out on great fits for our program there are still a number of anticipated big fish looking to test the market and enter the portal.

Simply its good economics at this point. Big deals have been done for obvious transfer portal entries and that sets a baseline for these late additions to come in a leverage as much money as they can before the house settlement on NIL turns toward revenue sharing and this right size a bit.

Still plenty of great names out there and many still to enter. If Brad has shown one thing consistently since this Tsunami called the transfer portal has hit land it is acquiring GREAT talent.

My only "worry" at this point is who from a staff perspective they are still considering to hold over. But as @Indy Illini Fan has alluded to I am more keen on seeing the augmentations and editing of the coaching staff.

Florida is as good an example of how important coaching and development of players are in this era. Clayton, Martin were not even a top 100 transfer when Florida added them.

Golden and his staff have done an incredible job identifying the "right" talent and maximizing player value. Be steadfast in believe, I-L-L

Sounds like they didn't secure him when they needed to. Sad to say this, but negotiating has to be part of the normal procedure for roster construction. If a guy is saying he'll stay but won't sign when you need to make a decision, then you may need to change your decision. I have seen far too many deals in my professional experience where parties were played as part of a negotiation. For some, verbal commitments are still part of their negotiation.
And to be clear, I'm not saying that solves the problem. You're still going to get buyer's remorse and other grumbling even when you've been clear about expectations and commitments. Character still matters, as do circumstances and good communication.
College bball has crossed the Rubicon of professional roster construction. In some ways that's entertaining, but it's also how the sausage gets made.

College athletics aren't sustainable under the current rules or lack thereof.

There needs to be some parameters in place for coaches and players, who are equally as unloyal in leaving and not respecting the meaning of a signature on a contract.

The issue is that the courts got involved, which basically made the NCAA more useless than it already was.

I don't think it's even that - even if they had a signed NIL, just like Morez, the player can bolt if his agent is still shopping him to see what deals he could have gotten and he thinks he can get more elsewhere, or frankly teams are tampering all the time now, so even if a player has signed teams are in his agent's ear telling him he can get more. It's a mess. How will teams know when their roster is even "set". Someone can come tamper with anyone that is signed and get them to back out of the deal and leave anyway. It's really chaos until the player is enrolled at your school for the fall, so it's hard to feel good about anything. The NCAA really needs to change the rules as everyone has said

Very similar to Morez situation, from the looks of it. Signed a new NIL deal and still bailed
based on what was said about the dad and him lying to certain people , seems like we needed less rez and it shows a basic poor level of parenting and that your word means nothing and your signature on a legal document means even less.......

I WAS very fond of Mr. Johnson JR. , but he's turned out to be just like his father.....the apple don't fall far from the tree is really really true.................................

Good riddance is what I say.......I really really do......

I just love the reactions throughout the portal season. Especially when players transfer out. Or when we don't get a player that we want. When Johnson left everyone was blaming Underwood. It's classic!

Anyone have access to actual NIL numbers? I think it would be available. Would be something a reporter could write a very good article about if they wanted to do some “freedom of information act” digging.
