Sunday musings while waiting for word on AS:
Seems like with shy-rocketing $$ to recruits over the past few years, we ultimately reach a point of equilibrium…where young guys like KJ, Riley, and dozens of others will see more money staying in college vs jumping to the league. Where is that level? $5M, $7M, $10M?? Guaranteed multi-yr contracts? Other perks? Depends on likely draft # for each of course, but at some point the grass looks greener on this side… then what? Could the $$ really get that high? Doesn’t seem to be an end so far.

Who knows…the marketplace is powerful and will find a solution to the chaos. And seems like the system needs to evolve into an ROI on invested capital model vs reliance on “contributions to collectives”. That’s seems shaky long-term. Regardless, pride and loyalty will decline in favor of $$…and that’s a real shame.

This sits above my desk at work, as it captures the nature of my work. Entirely coincidental, I'm sure, that the main color is orange ;)

speaking of which, Prof Scanlon was a boss

also, seems like we're the clubhouse leader in speculation, the vast majority baseless

Interesting most do this before getting into the portal….
There were always some thoughts that he may stay.

Seeing as Andrej went to Stanford and then Cal, I have always wondered, does he place a high value on education? Stanford isn't really a haven for 5 star recruits, and they hadn't made the tourney at all under their coach. After struggling at Stanford, Cal seemed a strange place to transfer to.

We are certainly a high level academic university, so that fits the mold. But so is UNC and Florida. I'm assuming his family lives in California. So I'm wondering if his preference is to stay on the West Coast, and he's talking to UCLA and USC to give them a chance to get involved to stay closer to home?

It really makes no sense why he hasn't committed long ago. I fully believe he gave us a soft commit on his visit, but it's been almost 10 days. We've seen how quickly recruitments can change just before a commitment. 10 days is not quick. It's got to be more than just money.

On the inside Illini podcast, Jeremy Werner keeps mentioning people wanting to sign guys early. The reasoning he gives is due to a court decision that is coming, that could change the way things work yet again. Seems as though this would be more of a full athletic department salary cap type of thing.
He mentions that we can use the current NIL funds, then a whole other allotment might open up to sign another guy after the court decision. I don't see it mentioned on this board, however. Any insight into this?
Of course, a salary cap opens up the possibility of under the table payments again.

I’m sure this is true, but… it’s much easier to secretly take $80k under the table than it is $3 million.
Yes, and even if that happens, as long as there are regulatory rules in place that can be enforced at least there will be a threat of punishment. Because this current unrestricted model isn't sustainable.

I would rather live with disappointment from time to time than give up hope. Hope and optimism make life worth living...
This is me 100%. The folks who feel this duty to ~temper our expectations~ are kind of the embodiment of the phrase “misery loves company.”

Go read boards for programs with similar records to ours over the last 5 years or so … we are easily less “homerish” than most of them. I choose to believe in the Illini and have a little swagger about our program until we fail, at which point we move on and keep said swagger!

To quote Al Czervik having observed Spaulding eating in the country club dining room: "Now I know why tigers eat their young."

At least our portal season hasn't resembled the "Dance of the Living Dead." We can use a little Earth, Wind & Fire on the back end, however. Here's hoping...

Happy beautiful Sunday afternoon fellow O&Bers. Long time (12-13 yrs?) observer/reader, and occasional poster, on the various iterations of this board. New phone would just not let me use my prior information to register so here I am as a newbie. So frustrating, but I'm old and so it's probably user error. 🤔

Just wanted to check in and say hi, and that I am looking forward to more of the never-ending information and entertainment on this board. Thanks to Dan, to the insiders, and to all who contribute, other than those pesky trolls.
