So the question is this: Was last year a regression to the mean and the Illini were just luckier than average, or has Bret implemented something that will make our habitual pre-season take obsolete? I believe it’s the later.

He appears to have implemented a better development system than we’ve had in years. He’s also ingrained a mentality to excel in the big moments. That’s repeatable. It looks like luck at first glance (looking at just one season) but it’s actually a better system that, combined with the experience level we return, will continue through this season too.

Part of becoming a successful program is finding ways to win those close games. If he can keep that momentum going from now on it could lead to 2 more wins a year. This applies to basketball too. I think that was part of the turnaround that Underwood has achieved since the first couple of seasons at Illinois which has added around four more wins per year. Ya we still blow a couple now and then but we used to lose everyone of them like it was a curse. Apologies for switching to basketball at the end

It’s a hot day, so I may be misreading your post.

Are you really asking whether last season, a 10 win season that tied for a program high was “a regression to the mean”

Keep in mind, there are no programs that consistently win close games.

Nick Saban ran arguably the most successful program of all time and was 30-20 in his 17 years in one score games at Alabama.

The most successful programs don’t need to win close games because they don’t have them. They win by more than one score.

That is not what he’s suggesting. Rather, we had really bad luck from 2021-2023, and our good luck last year was just balancing it out.

However, he also rejected that idea and suggested that maybe we are just structurally better set up to “make our own luck.” And I’m good with that take!

I mentioned a year ago. Carson has an arm like Ohtani's ball coming off his bat. Man he throws with a cannon and it sounds different. Hard to explain. Hope Trey is progressing along. We need a powerful Qb room. Coach Art is a star.

Yes, you explained that better than I did. (Tried to rush a response while working). Thanks Fighter.

Personally, I think we are better now than in 2021-23. Our coaching staff is better and it comes across as luck. The coaches making more intelligent decisions and giving our guys a better chance at a favorable outcome is by design.

BYU QB Retzlaff transferring. You know what that means. We're gonna hear abut BYU going shopping for a transfer QB with bags of cash to throw around. Oy vey.
