Rick Mount is probably the greatest college shooter in history. The only player I have seen in his league is Steph Curry.

Rick Mount was not athletic, slow, and small (listed as 6’1” - I met him several times more like 5’ 10”. We had a player named Rick Howett who was a very good shooter and would get us like 18-20 per game, problem was Mount would score 40+ against us. Remember he did that WITHOUT a three point line.
Dave Downey could also fill it up for the Illini. Once hit for 53 in a game. if I am remembering correctly. I believe that record still stands.

Never heard of him, but his wiki page is unreal:

In his senior year, Mount had two 53-point games, plus a 61-point game against conference champion Iowa.Thirty-two of his 61 points were scored in the first half. Later research found that if the three-point line had existed in college basketball in 1970, he would have scored 74 points in that game, and been credited with 13 three-point field goals. The official school record is ten, held by Carsen Edwards.

In a win against Marquette to bring the Boilers to the Final Four, Mount is remembered for his "leaping lofter" game-winning shot with two seconds left in overtime. He led all scorers in the tournament with a 40.6 point average in Purdue's three games...he led the Boilers to the NCAA Championship game where they lost to a Lew Alcindor-led UCLA.

I'd say Plummer is a close second if not equal to. Statistically, they were both 40% shooters on 10 attempts per 40. Jamar had a little more to his game though.
I could see it. But the one thing I see is that his Sophmore year, was a tremendous statistical anomaly. 32% when his other 3 years were 43%, 47% and 48%. Granted 2 of his year’s were D II, which he was the player of the year, but his best year was at Illinois.

Athletic Paywall: Best 25 College Basketball Teams of the 2000s

I'll save you the click if you don't have The Athletic:
I try not to be one of those Illini fans who ceaselessly talks about the '05 team on repeat...but I'm sorry, in no sane world is that team ranked behind last year's Florida team, last year's Duke team, the 2012 Louisville team and some others listed ahead. Nonsense lol

Well, well, well . . . I just happen to be in Greece this coming week. Let Geoff know I'm available to help out any way I can.

BTW, I'm in Scotland this week. Did you know that have whisky distilleries here? Hundreds of them! I'm visiting two a day for the rest of this week, I might need help drinking some of this stuff when I get home . . .
Sounds like you need to update your handle by the week...name does not check out! ;)

I feel like his name needs to be in italics:

“On the far side of the court, Geophilos Alexandros, better known as The Eastern European Bucket Getter, cautiously waits for his defender to approach, instinctively knowing that he can snake his way past the slow-footed biped for an easy basket.”

Yes you’re correct, but he played before Mount did. We had a guy named Rick Schmidt about 5 years later who could also score really well from the outside.

I am 64 years old, and have seen all the greats from say 1970 forward. Never have I seen anyone shoot like Rick Mount. He was not a good pro because he could not get his shot off against better athletes.

I think in today’s NBA he might have had a role on a team like Miami that plays pretty much all zone and he could get off long 3 points shots since the game is designed for that now? Remember when Mount played everything was designed for interior scoring.

If Mount could play today in college he would average over 50 a game I am convinced of it.

Doubtful. He's 78 years old.

If you saw him play you would not forget him. One of the most dynamic shooters I have seen in my life and I am old.

Why do we waste so much energy on things that are irrelevant and do not contribute to information or opinions about Illini sports. Man, I miss the days when a couple of pages would answer any current questions. Are people ate up with bantering back and forth and thinking most of us really care? Go out and mow the yard or something useful.

DJ Richardson was big ten freshman of the year and pure from deep. He was a solid player but never really turned into the great I thought he was gonna be.

That sure was a great shot he made to win the game in Oahu at the university of Hawaii before the maui invitational. Not much of us there but we went crazy. What a comeback that was.

Dave Downey could also fill it up for the Illini. Once hit for 53 in a game. if I am remembering correctly. I believe that record still stands.
February 16, 1963: "Before the game at Bloomington’s IU Field House, Downey was feeling ill. So bad, in fact, that he didn’t participate in pregame warm-ups. But once the whistle blew, Downey was ready. He hit 11 of 17 shots in the first half for 27 points. Downey almost matched that in the second half with another 26 points. He finished the game 22 of 34 from the field and nine of nine at the line. He set new Big Ten records that day for points and field goals in a game."
Fast forward 60+ years. Following law school and a successful business career, Dave and his family have donated millions of dollars to the University of Illinois, the most recent of which occurred last month when he and his wife Jane Hays donated $2 million to the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
A true STUDENT-ATHLETE and loyal alumni. I L L . . .

Rick Howett was an excellent shooter as well. His older brother was a friend and classmate of mine at the Law School at Illinois.
