Boyd has had an amazing season and is one of the reasons they've achieved what they've achieved. I don't want this to sound negative, but he's not an ace of a staff that's capable of winning a pennant. He's a #3 starter in a World Series contender, a #2 starter on a team that capable of doing some damage in the postseason and a #1 starter on an above average team that will consider it a fun summer ending in a playoff appearance.

They don't have a reliable starting staff, outside of Palencia/Keller/Theilbar there's nobody in the pen who you can trust and they have a major issue offensively because they don't get productive at bats 1 thru 9 and they don't play situational baseball well at all. The amount of bad AB's with runners on is staggering. Happ shouldn't be playing at all.

Then, they have no bench to speak of.

This team isn't one player away from truly competing and they're going to lose Tucker in the off-season. Grab a bat to build the bench strength and grab a reliever who can come in and be a bridge to Thielbar, Keller and Palencia.

Don't do anything crazy.

The way Cardinals fans feel about David Freese’s Game 6 in the 2011 World Series is how Cub fans feel about “The Sandberg Game”. As a lifelong Cardinals fan, I never liked how Sandberg lifted his already great play against St. Louis. But I always respected his professionalism and how hard he played. He was part of a pretty good stretch of the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry in the mid to late 1980s.

Ryne Sandberg passed away…
A few things I remember about Ryno.
1. In 1990 a friend invited me to attend the Home Run Derby. Ryan won. The American League and National League was stacked with home run hitters. McGwire, Griffey Jr, Canseco and Cecil Fielder for the AL. Bonilla, Stawberry and Matt Williams were the other NL attendees. I didn't expect Ryan to win. When he did I was happy for him and the Wrigley faithful who were cheering for him.
2. "The Sandberg Game". 2 home runs off Bruce Sutter. Are you kidding me? He only had 19 all year.
3. That smile. Need I say more?
4. He was a class act.
I almost always wished he played in St Louis.

A friend of mine called me saturday morning of the Sandberg game, asked me if I wanted to go to the game. Sure, why not. So we drove the 2+ hourse from Champaign to find out the game was sold out. Damn it! We went to the Sunday game, not quite as historic.

It's time to make a move that will fire up the team. There is no reason to wait. Every day they wait an important game is being played.

One WS is worth a few bad years.
I’m really surprised at the number of people who don’t want to see trades made unless we get really good players (preferably controllable) for mid-tier or lower prospects. Yes, the Cubs have holes, and we may not be able to fill them all, but what team really scares you out there? Did anyone have Arizona and Texas in World Series two years ago? There are 3 days left in July and Cubs are a game out of first and 3.5 games to the good in wild card race. We’re not talking about a team that is 4 or 5 games out of a wildcard spot hoping to make a run.

I only have 3 “untouchables” (and I’d include one of them in right deal). Those are Owen Caissie, Jefferson Rojas and Jaxon Wiggins. There are others on top 30 list I’d prefer not to see traded, but it takes talent to get talent. That leaves Cubs management with 2 top 100 prospects as well as other talented guys to get some deals made, plug some holes and give the Cubs a real chance at making this a season worth remembering. Are some of the guys the Cubs trade away going to become good MLB players? Sure. Stars? Less likely. Barely sniff the majors? Yes. All prospects don’t pan out just as all trades don’t work out. But I’d rather see us go for it now rather than wait on some prospects who won’t contribute at the major league for several years if at all. And no that doesn’t mean gut the farm system. But surgical cuts to bring in some reinforcements to fill holes should be made.

PSA coming - not baseball related so feel free to skip over.

Knowing he had stage 4 cancer without knowing the details of his experience, it seems to me like he either didn't get a routine checkup or if he did get one in the past, he waited a long time to get another one. As a prostate cancer survivor myself (3.5 years down and I still have 1.5 years to go until I'm declared cured), prostate cancer is a cancer that is curable at very high percentages, as long as you catch it early (like in my case). Usually, if it's Stage 4 or 5, it's tough to come back from that. The PSA I have is this, guys: please get yourself tested, especially if you're high risk, either due to ethnicity or if it's in your family. It's a simple blood test that takes 2 minutes to do and you could save your life. And ladies, we need your help, too. Men are bad about going to the doctor so make sure the men in your life get their PSA checked yearly.

If anyone is going through prostate cancer or knows someone who is and wants to chat about it, feel free to drop me a private message and I'll be happy to share my experience with it to date. There is a lot of good info out on the internets, too, so have a look around there.

PSA over. Cubs need to get the next two.

I would also add to keep up on general prostrate health as well. As someone who has been dealing with issues from an enlarged prostrate that required a procedure two weeks ago and still working way back to normalcy, I can tell you it has not been fun. Good news is that enough tissue was recovered from the procedure to perform a biopsy and no signs of cancer. But regular PSA tests will certainly — and gladly — be a part of my future.

OK, back to baseball. Let’s make some deals Hoyer.

-Nico should be leading off every day. Not just against lefties.

-Don't get me wrong. Tucker is a really good ballplayer. Has knowledge of the strike zone I haven't seen in a long time. However, unless he gets hot the last 2 months of the season, I don't see how his power numbers even come close to someone who wants a $500 MIL contract. I suppose everyone will now come after me.

I think there are very few players worth $500M, but that is the going rate for top players now and Tucker is in that neighborhood. He’s not likely going to hit 50+ HR, but over last 4 seasons he’s had 30, 30, 29 and 23, and last year he was on a pace to hit 46 if played a full season. He also just turned 28 this year, so he won’t even be 35 for 6 of the years on a new contract. He hasn’t had a good July that is for sure, but given his track record he’s probably good for another 9 or 10 HR the rest of the way. I also like that he regularly hits as well or better on the road.

Is he a superstar? Maybe not. Is he good enough to be the centerpiece of a World Series team? I think so. Would love to see him on the Cubs for a long while.

I feel like the moment was too big for Boyd.
I don’t think so. Unless you consider last night’s game bigger than the 3 playoff games he started last year with an ERA of 0.77 and a 1.11 WHIP.

He had to wait through a 40 pitch inning before he could even take the mound and he wasn’t sharp. He had a bad game.

I am a stage III colorectal survivor. 5 years out. I was 40 years old when I was diagnosed. "Too young" for a colonoscopy, according to my now ex-doctor. If you "see something, say something" doesn't just apply to crime. Listen to your body, and if your doctor won't listen to you, get another one.

Take care of yourselves, and each other.
RIP Ryno.
