This could be fake, but Mateer did delete his venmo

if this is, indeed, true, pretty impressive to just comment away exactly what you're doing. even more impressive if that was publicly shared.

Kind of a random post, but I was making a spreadsheet to keep track of TV ratings this year for every conference, and it got me thinking about "Rivalry Weekend" matchups. Many often complain about us being saddled with Northwestern for perpetuity, and I count myself in that group. However, when I looked at these and tried to group them in these categories, some are SO forced due to conference expansion, haha. FTR, there are some that get "left out in the cold" for that weekend, leading to a weird matchup because that team played its bigger rival(s) earlier in the year ... a classic example is Miami (FL) having a weird matchup because FSU is playing Florida that weekend. However, I chose to just rank them on the matchup:

Excellent and/or Totally Natural
Michigan vs. Ohio State
Alabama vs. Auburn
Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss
Texas vs. Texas A&M
UCLA vs. USC
Clemson vs. South Carolina
Florida vs. Florida State
Oregon vs. Washington
Minnesota vs. Wisconsin
Kentucky vs. Louisville
Indiana vs. Purdue
Virginia vs. Virginia Tech
Arizona vs. Arizona State
NC State vs. North Carolina

Not Really Historic But Very Natural
Iowa vs. Nebraska

Logical But A Clear Tier Below Other Potential Rivalries
Georgia vs. Georgia Tech
Tennessee vs. Vanderbilt
Illinois vs. Northwestern

Historic, NOT Logical and a Clear Tier Below Other Potential Rivalries
Stanford vs. Notre Dame
Iowa State vs. Oklahoma State
Baylor vs. Houston

Logical But Pretty Lame
Boston College vs. Syracuse
Duke vs. Wake Forest

Fairly Forced But Actually a Decent Idea
LSU vs. Oklahoma
Arkansas vs. Missouri

Fairly Forced and Pretty Lame
Penn State vs. Rutgers

Totally Weird and/or Lame
Maryland vs. Michigan State
BYU vs. UCF
Miami (FL) vs. Pitt
Kansas vs. Utah
Colorado vs. Kansas State
Texas Tech vs. West Virginia
Cal vs. SMU
Cincinnati vs. TCU

I'm sure there is SOME logic behind all of this, but it is a real head scratcher that actual rivalries like Cal/Stanford, BYU/Utah, Kansas/Kansas State, Baylor/TCU, etc. and seemingly much more natural matchups like Cincinnati/West Virginia, Miami (FL)/UCF, etc. don't take the place of some of these games. You will also notice that the other two rivalries in our tier are EXTREMELY similar. While the other two are clearly better and/or more intense (especially Georgia/Georgia Tech), they all have the same dynamic:

1. Large state flagship school (Illinois/Georgia/Tennessee) vs. private and/or smaller school (Northwestern/Georgia Tech/Vanderbilt).
2. Smaller/private school is generally considered academically superior and athletically inferior.
3. State flagship school is located in a more traditional college town (Champaign/Athens/Knoxville) a couple hours away from the main MSA (Chicago/Atlanta/Nashville) where its alumni tend to gravitate after graduation.
4. Smaller/private school is located IN the aforementioned large MSA, but it struggles to gain fan support beyond its relatively smaller alumni base.
5. The aforementioned MSA is also a hub for graduates from a ton of other schools in the conference (Big Ten/SEC), setting up a dynamic where it's a bit of a "neutral ground," which the state flagship school being a first among equals and the smaller/private school actually being outnumbered by some of the transplant fan bases.
6. Smaller/private school devotes much of its animosity toward the state flagship school, but the state flagship school's fans generally get significantly more worked up about matchups with other rivals (Iowa/Purdue for Illinois, Florida/Auburn for Georgia, Alabama/Florida for Tennessee).
7. The schools that the state flagship school would probably WANT to play on "Rivalry Weekend" will never be available, as they have very clearly more natural matchups with other programs (Iowa has Nebraska, Purdue has Indiana, Florida has FSU, Auburn has Alabama, etc.).

Still bums me out that there is an alternate reality where it is very easy to see Illinois/Iowa as an incredibly great and solidified rivalry. :(

This was a great read. Wish we had a cool long-standing rivalry as well but in it's absence, a protected matchup with NW seems like a nice consolation prize. Especially, last game of the season where you could potentially get a somewhat convincing win and roll into Conference Championship/Postseason on a high note. It really felt like our running game was springboarded off NW. Laughery looked like he was playing with better vision and confidence in the Citrus Bowl.

Think Iowa like you mentioned OR Indiana would be great matchups in an alternate timeline.

He claims they were inside jokes with a friend. Pretty stupid inside joke to make on a public-facing app.

How is Texas Tech vs SMU in this realm?

I haven't been around the Metroplex in a while, but I seem to remember quite a rivalry between grads, at least.

Absolutely true.

Also, have you used these Venmo or similar type apps?

Dudes will put the most outrageous taboo stuff on the reason for transfer line. Guys in my platoon would regularly put things that would imply felonies over sending money for a haircut.

I do use Venmo but I have it set to private. I can’t, for the life of me, understand why anyone would want to share their financial transactions — legal or otherwise. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Same with Waze. Love it, but I’ve turned off the feature that lets your friends know your location. I tell too many lies to avoid doing things only for my GPS app to out me.

I do the same as you. But I think younger generations see it as just another form of social media.

Fighter, your dedication to creating solid content is impressive and appreciated by this reader. And, I TOTALLY agree on the Illinois/Iowa rivalry.

Because it isn't. Not even close

ESPN article says over $30 mil. If the new trend for the NCAA is to fund itself with massive penalties (not sure where the money goes and my google skills didn't get an answer) then put me in the no thanks column. I'm all for sanctioning the people responsible - Harbaugh, Moore, Stalions, but without comparable punishments for similar violations, I'm giving this one some side eye. Be interesting to see what their appeal looks like and if it goes to the lawyers after that.

Despite my skepticism on the NCAA's impartiality, I think hefty fines are a good deterrent.

the best would be that UM should not be able to acknowledge the championship in signage or in publications / website .

they cheated against many teams incl us . we were jobbed in that game as well . their whole 2023 year is tainted .
