Hmm. The Duke -Elon game was tied at 10 at the half. Their QB had great stats, but from the highlights I saw, his receivers were wide open and he didn't need (or display) pin-point accuracy. And Duke's tackling in the secondary didn't look great.
If the Illinois play with the right mindset, I think we win by ten.

I think we get the run game going and establish an early lead. Duke will become increasingly one dimensional passers and Jacas & Co. pin their ears back.

Think Bret will M-F the O Line this week for not playing up to standards. Should see alot better effort out of that group.

I want Jacas, Durojaiye, Hood, Barna, and the rest to wreck Mensah
Duke didn't dominate either line of scrimmage vs Elon.
On top of that, their offense relied on deep balls. Very little check down/short game. Duke LT lost the battle vs. Elon Edge repeatedly. I say all this to say....it could get nasty for Mensah. Jacas might get 2.5 sacks, if he doesn't it'll be because they double him and the rest of the boys up front get to eat!

Most of Duke's running yards were huge chunk plays as well. They opened up holes 'okay' but it wasn't like they reset the line of scrimmage 3 yards. Looked to be blown assignments by Elon LB corps for the most part. Hole would open up and LBs would get swallowed up in the mess instead of filling the open gap as they should.

I say all this to say-- I love the matchup. Our defense is bend, don't break. Rarely, if ever does Illinois get gashed for deep balls. We've typically struggled with a balanced running attack with a good short passing game. I don't know if Duke will have the patience to take what our Defense gives.

Really comes down to whether Duke can sustain long drives without getting tempted to air it out. They actually LOST the time of possession game vs Elon by 5 minutes so I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't stick to what they do. If so, Illinois wins 35-24.

Granted, Elon may not be a great way to project fan attendance. However, Duke had what looked to be 30k fans in actual attendance. I'm tempted to visit family in NC and get a closer seat then I could ever get at Memorial 😂.
A guy at the office has a son at Duke. He says Duke has been pushing our game HARD and really encouraging student attendance. (He may have said giving away student tix?)
