Sagarin ratings as of this morning. We are what we are. For those complaining about Notre Dame, take note.

Also: Iowa đź‘€

Illinois unranked (#26) in AP Poll

See, this is exactly what we didn't need. We will have an uphill battle to get into the playoff even if we run the table. That is why rankings matter.

Disagree that the AP poll has zero effect. It greatly shapes perception, which becomes reality in people's (uninformed) minds.
Which is a whole other level of issues. The AP voters are embarrassing. Just look at the preseason. These guys don’t know anything about football and turn in random ballots. Time to get the humans out of this voting nonsense and replace with AI

The polls, for decades, have taken the simplest stat available, wins and losses, and have made them meaningless.

I don't disagree at all. But, we have lost to arguably the two best teams in the nation playing one of the hardest schedules with no bye until this week. Yet, as an unranked team our name and logo will not show up anywhere for at least the next two weeks. Hard to overcome.

Hard to overcome? Haha what’s there to overcome? Oh no! We aren’t ranked we may lose half the recruiting class! I think it’ll be ok haha. You win you’ll get ranked. It’s way overrated though in the sense just becuase you are ranked doesn’t stay that way - see Penn state who was top 5 and fired their coach weeks later. Again, win and votes will come - even by the clowns who pick out of a hat.

We might only be out a week as teams above us could lose so we can slip back in.

No the playoff rankings are completely separate from the AP poll that use metrics and start fresh when they’re first released.
Ok, we will see when the first ranking comes out after playing Washington and Rutgers. I hope you are right, but I still believe these polls shape CFP committee - member perceptions to some degree.

NEBRASKA gets in a spot ahead of us at #25?!?! I get that they're 5-1 and we're 5-2, but our schedule so far compared to their schedule so far is NO comparison! Here's the juggernaut teams they've beaten to get to that deceptive 5-1:

Cincinnati
Akron
HCU(a team I literally had to look up because, even tho I have a vast knowledge of sports, especially college sports, I had no idea who they even were; they're the Houston Christian Huskies)
Michigan State, barely
Maryland, and they needed a 4th quarter comeback to barely beat Maryland.

Their loss is to Michigan, a team who just lost to USC, a team we BEAT!

I expected we'd be close to dropping out, but would hang on at #24 or #25. Apparently, you can play nothing but cupcakes and get into the top 25 over a team, us, who has beaten quality and ranked teams, put up more points against OSU than anybody has so far this year(and we should've had a lot more points if it weren't for getting hosed by the refs), and has a MUCH tougher schedule. And our schedule isn't even THAT tough, but it's sure a helluva lot together than Nebraska's! Make it make sense!

yeah and whether we are 23 or 26 doesn’t matter right now. Win and it doesn’t matter. People get way into polls that can change drastically the following week.

We can try to make ourselves feel better all day and night. Regardless, it is better to be ranked than not ranked. And this is not a complaint about where we are as a program. As BB said, these opportunities only come around so often. And as the weeks roll on "drastic" changes slow way down.

They’re of course going to have some crossover because both the AP poll and the CFP poll are looking to accomplish the same thing, rank the top 25 programs in college football. But the CFP ranking is not shaped by the AP poll.

Here’s the first CFP poll released last year on week 10 compared to where each team was ranked in the week 10 AP poll:

1 Oregon
2 Ohio State (+1)
3 Georgia (-1)
4 Miami (+1)
5 Texas (+1)
6 Penn State (-3)
7 Tennessee
8 Indiana (+5)
9 BYU
10 Notre Dame (-2)
11 Alabama (+3)
12 Boise State (+3)
13 SMU (+7)
14 Texas A&M (-4)
15 LSU (+1)
16 Mississippi (+3)
17 Iowa State (-6)
18 Pittsburg
19 Kansas State (-2)
20 Colorado (+3)
21 Washington State (+1)
22 Louisville (+8)
23 Clemson (-12)
24 Missouri (+1)
25 Army (-4)

Notable: We were #24 in the AP poll, but unranked in the CFP poll.
