Virginia Tech ... If they could offer top notch NIL in spite of being outside of the Power Two, I might even move them up further. Some folks are surprised to find out they're the preferred team in much of the DC Area (at least VA side) and the vast majority of that large state, and the expectations wouldn't be delusional.

Despite its mediocrity over the past decade, VT has far and away the staunchest P-5 fan support north of Clemson/USC(arolina) other than Penn State in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast. No one else is close. The stadium experience is excellent win or lose. It will be completely off the hook (again, as it was in the Frank Beamer years) if they can snag a HC who can win.

I'll be there to see them get blown out by Miami in a couple weekends, and will no doubt have a great time despite the outcome.

South Carolina dumping (or blessing a move elsewhere) Beamer would be such a recipe for disaster. The 2024 Gamecocks was their best team since peak Spurrier (11 years). If you remove the Spurrier tenure (he had three consecutive years they finished in the AP top-10!), the 2024 team is their best team since 1987, when they had yet to join the SEC.

The Gamecocks will never be a consistent contender in the SEC. If you have a coach that can build a playoff contender every once in a while, that's a coach worth keeping.

the odds of Fickell being able to turn the ship around are maybe 1 in 8.
its just so unlikely at this level of competition and at this point in time with NIL & transfers

not impossible, just very unlikely

what this also tells me is the 1 or 2 guys they were interested in , were not interested back

The argument for Fickell being successful is their schedule is much easier next year. The non-conference is really tough (Notre Dame in Lambeau, Pitt at home), but no Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana, or Michigan next year. Very, very manageable.

They still have usc, Iowa, penn state. Is it worth brining him back to go 6-6 in year 4.

also gotta love the logic of expecting better due to a weak schedule translating into keeping an under performing coach

IMO, trying to predict who will be good next season in an 18-team league in the current era is a fool's errand. For all we know, teams you didn't name who are on Wisconsin's schedule could get windfall doughski and attract all the right mercenaries a la Indiana and overnight become not so "manageable."

Yeah, without massive improvement, I see 6-6:

Their 2 highest commits already have OU, tOSU and UT circling...doubt they make it to signing day

They also have never gotten the right transfer qb. They are also losing most of their receiving yards. I know they’ll have more money to spend but I don’t see them shopping at the top shelf during the portal

Interesting. Then who is accountable, if not the head coach?
I didn’t pursue that as we were on to other matter. I believe he said that the communication among the line is poor. The players are responsible for that and secondarily of course the coaches.

IU (likely), PSU, IL, Rutgers, Iowa, & NW all will be in the market for QBs as well.
