Every new coach is gonna go transfer portal hard and that window doesn’t open till January. They will be fine if they get a good coach and attack the portal hard ala Cignetti at IU

He reportedly was offered the USC job before they ended up hiring Lincoln Riley, and he turned it down.
I don’t know if he was ever officially offered, but everything i heard from the Des Moines area sports people a few years ago led me to believe the Browns had legitimate interest when they eventually hired Kevin Stefanski.

Yeah, if you include NFL jobs I've also read he turned down an offer from the Lions, and turned down an opportunity to interview for the Jets.

The other complicating factor for any coach who takes on the PSU job is that, apparently boosters and players are very invested in the idea of hiring Terry Smith as the full time head coach. Additionally, Smith is apparently a leading candidate for other HC jobs, such as UConn and Memphis, if/when he doesn't get the PSU job.

So you're going to take on a program that added basically nothing in 2026 prep recruiting, that already has a pretty Senior loaded roster (i.e. players that will not be returning next season), and that could face major retention challenges with players loyal to Smith either following him, or going elsewhere. You're likely going to have to build an entirely new roster out of transfers, which can be done (see e.g. Indiana) but is very easy to mess up (see e.g. North Carolina). This is a huge challenge for whoever takes the job, but it's worth noting that historically, Matt Campbell has not really been a big transfer portal guy. And you'll have to work hard to get the boosters back on board so you have the resources to do that, and some of them might be upset that 'their guy' didn't get the job, and that you did.

Even if they knock the hire out of the park at this point (and its debatable whether Campbell would represent 'knocking it out of the park') this search has been hilariously bad. The whole point of firing Franklin mid-season was ostensibly to get a head start on the search and maintain as much roster and recruiting integrity as possible, and they have completely failed on that score.

EDIT to add: In a further twist that makes this even more delightful, the guy they fired did get a head start on recruiting at his new job, exactly what PSU wanted for itself, and VT pulled in the #23 class in the country per 247, in large part with guys that committed to him while he was at PSU. This is the highest ranked class (per 247) VT has had since 2013.

And in any event, they've already poisoned the well and made it nearly impossible to successfully hire Smith, anyway. They would be Cubit-ing him into the job.

Just an end-to-end clinic of what not to do.

he's a good coach. no doubt. but hardly their top tier choice and I dont see him being better than Franklin though.
he's got a lot to make up in recruiting.
One wonders how many recruits and existing players at ISU follow him there

Does ISU have a plan for succession?
Its been said Nate Scheelhaase is in a great spot to be an NFL OC or HC where he is presently on the Rams staff under McVay.
Is he a candidate?

Nate, Sean Lewis or Jason Candle … That’d be the order I’d go in as well …

I highly doubt they promote from within but they could …

Would be perfect for Nate to get his HC career started … Bret has some more years in the tank and then we can bring Nate home … 😎

Nate is a successful young offensive mind who is now part of the McVay tree. He could easily be an NFL head coach within a few years.

Unless he just wants to be in college, taking on a challenging job like Iowa State doesn't seem to be the right move at this point in his career.
