Forgive us if a few of us reserve judgement until after the wedding.

Also, then Hampton should be portaling.
I have no idea what he was told a year ago, but I doubt it was " come here for 2 years and when Luke leaves, its your job to lose"
its very likely his role so far is exactly what he thought it wouild be. "hold a clip board and wear a cap on the sidelines unless our starter gets hurt, if ever"

if the bowl game is out of reach in either direction, I hope he gets some snaps in the bowl game . I've heard he's a real good guy

i think there are maybe six teams in the big ten that definitely have next year's starting qb on the roster

Liberty RB Evan Dickens is in the portal. Went absolutely nuts in his last five games (only played 11, only got 20+ touches those last 5) to finish with 1339 yards and 16 touchdowns. Should have two years of eligibilty.

Also in the portal: SMU OT King Large.

We aren't getting a transfer just to get a transfer, we aren't going after someone to solidify the back up spot like we did with Hampton last year, we will be going after a guy who is a clear cut number 1 guy like we did with Luke.

Hampton can portal that's fine, if he is your guy then Bret isn't doing his job....Solid back up type not the guy you want leading your P4 team for 12 weekends in the fall.

I'm really not sure how many times this needs to be said

If we're getting a transfer, what's the point of recruiting high school QBs? Better question, why would a high school QB commit to anywhere they don't have a direct path to the field?

If my son was the #60 QB in his class, I'd tell him, do not go to the big school unless you're willing to change positions. Instead, go to an NIU or Tulane where you have a better chance to see the field, then if you have success, you just transfer to the big school.

Football is so strange that the rosters are so big. So many guys are 4 year scholarship athletes that never see the field.

Seems like the MAC/MVC schools will have access to much better QB talent than in the past for this reason - kids want to play and not sit at P2 schools, while waiting to recruited over using the portal

So would you guess that Boyd will transfer or a position switch?

I'm just laying out what's going on and did say a "few" of us. I know I'm in the minority when not frothing over portals or recruits. Oddly, Hampton was an Illinois player and he's one of the few that never gets mentioned as locking down the state. You'd think he was from Mars. I'm also not making a judgement beyond....

Bielema as been good in the portal but not great so reserving judgement is warranted, IMO. He's picked up some very good players but still quite a lot of non-contributors and flame outs. It takes a certain player to make a match with Bielema and it doesn't always work out.

I'm cautiously, kinda-sorta, optimistic.

At what point do the solid QB recruits that we keep landing (thank god) begin to take the reigns?
Is Boyd the guy in 2027? Is he willing to wait another year?
Clayton is coming in next year and is supposedly a stud.
Lopati will be here in 2027.

Example, I think Mestemaker would be a terrible fit for Bielema.

Mestemaker is very talented but he just throws it. Doesn't matter if even triple covered, he's flinging it. He'll get his yards but against good defenses they are going to pick him off far too often for the hunker down and win the turnover battle Bielema.

I think you'll see a battle with our prep recruits after next year.

I'm not saying Boyd could't really stand out in spring ball and take it from whichever transfer we land but it'll be the transfers job to lose all the way til summer.

Boyd is a year away. He has all the tools(- height). It just takes time to develop QB's. There are very few Freshman you just throw out there. Look at Underwood at Michigan this year.
I really like Boyd and think another year in the system would prepare him to step into the starting role in 27. I'm hoping he has the patience to stick with it and wait for his turn because I think he is a good fit in the current Illini offensive system. Of course, the portal changes everything in a blink...and I've heard rumors somewhere that the Illini might be looking into the portal for a QB :)

I assume it is extremely important to have the transfer quarterback on campus 2d semester?
