Longtime lurker here, figure this is a fine time to make my first post
This was a truly fun basketball game to watch. I believe both teams are top 15 as of now. The season is far from over after that loss. Nebraska’s offense was fantastic and that last shot…they earned it tonight.
Some takeaways:
Need to come out with fire to open first/second halves.
Need to take the hot shooter out of the game before the second half.
Did finish both halves with fire, good to see.
I think Andrej was the team’s leading rebounder today, love to see it.
Tomi is not 100% yet, he’ll get better as the season goes on
The soft tech on Z really killed the momentum, we never recovered from that
This team is going to win a ton of games this year, losses like this happen. Just have to make it the only such loss. I think it stays quad 1.
Beat mizzou, ILL!
Nebraska is not a top 15 team.

I'm sorry...

Hoiberg knows Brad Underwood teams will chuck 3s because *statistics* after 3 passes side to side....

Any disciplined approach would be to drive and attack the basket....they don't have a good defender on their team... I'm sorry! They HAD to foul every drive...but we kept going away from it....

Not sure why anyone expects anything different from a Brad Underwood team. This year will be like every other year. I’m sure the year end will be the same.
He's brought consistency which has been great. Seems like he ignores defensive ability when he recruits. Is that because we don't have the funds to get more athletic players or becuase he chooses to build the roster this way.

I’m not tooting my own pregame horn, nor excusing their performance, but this was absolutely a classic trap game.

Now they have bamboo spikes up their buttholes.
I know what you mean, but I’m not sure how an undefeated ranked team at Home can qualify as a trap game. I think what you really mean is you just felt like we were gonna lose because that’s what this team does when we have a chance to go on a winning streak.

For what it’s worth I also felt terrible about this game going in

I just don’t think you can consider a team that is about to be ranked above you a trap game. This wasn’t USC from last year. If you don’t come to play at the top for these games you got a lot more losses in your future and may just not be as good as you thought going in. Still hopeful for a second weekend if we get to work but these are games great teams win and we didn’t.

A trap game. Not a trap team.

A game like this doesn’t get away from a top 3 B1G team. All credit to Nebby, they were the better team today.

But Illinois best game wins that game by 10.

Nebraska is a good team that going into this game should have scared anybody paying attention. The Illini are right on track for their second quadrant (think 5th to 10th) place finish in the conference, as expected.

Nebraska has lights out shooters

Good teams will pound the F out of them down low. Something we absolutely failed to do today.

Tomi scored his only 3 points (I believe) with a minute or two left to go ...on a 3. Mirk is on a milk carton somewhere. Size matters only when you actually use it.

We are gonna watch 10 other B1G teams drive and get to the basket at will and this Nebraska team has NO answer for that.

They can shoot the lights out, though!

Nebraska is for real, but remember that they got 5 points on that BS technical and 2 more on that phantom foul on Tomi. Now to see how many Crying Illini pissants act like this was a 15-point loss
Refs aren’t out to get us when we’re playing at home vs. a program with no history, though, lol… We gifted them points off the bat, that was the margin of error.

It's Groundhog day every year. Once again, we are inconsistent, can't defend, play only when we feel like playing - all while coaches sit on their hands. No adjustments to try to stop a guy making 7 threes in a half. No timeouts to chew some *** and demand some fire and intensity out of the team in the first ten minutes leading to a 13 point deficit on our home floor. And then another 10 point deficit in the second half. No flashing to the middle of a zone defense, pass the ball around the perimeter until time expires and chuck a three.

And half our fanbase chastises/patronizes those that are upset by it. SMH

When you give up 80 to 90 points every single game, you, we are gonna lose a ton. We are not gonna make 30 free throws to bail us out. Our defense is no better than last year or year before.
Andrei is no better at this point than Rj Melendez and that shocks me. Keaton, Bam, and Mirch are keepers. I said start of season we are a 12 or 13 loss team.
Keep promoting Son and his buddy. That'll work, actually it Doesn't. Nebraska is solid. That was a horrible team effort and coaches. They need to stay out of bars when in Champaign.

We NEED to figure out how to play defense. Can't have one player go nuclear every game.

Wagler played 40 minutes tonight and looked excellent. Imo, he is clearly the best player on this team and will be a lottery pick this year. He is so mature for a freshman, and I can't see him not getting better and better as the season goes on.

For gosh sakes

Nebraska has gone from a double digit underdog three hours ago to now ‘top 15’ and ‘elite’. And some delusional deflectors above blaming the fanbase, and being louder in neutral games.

How about putting the blame where it belongs?

I am not saying we stink overall, or the season is a failure, or anything like that. But this game was awful and all too reminiscent of many past games.
Nebraska is not elite but they are a good team that plays hard. They will end up as a fringe top-20 team at the end of the year, just like Illinois.

First game since @Michigan State in 2024 that we shoot 30% from three, 70% from the line and still lose.

Nebraska shoots 46.2% from 3 (which is ballistic). Sometimes a team just makes every shot, and there’s only so much you could do. I know Thornton going off was frustrating, but just for comparison, OSU only shot 32% for the game. Nebby played their A++ game, we played our B game… they still needed a contested 25 foot buzzer beater.

Tomi and Ben had zero points each before their threes. They weren’t great today, but takes some big time guts to knock those down in the final minute.
As well as a TERRIBLE call in the final minute to give them two FTs. I hope that foul call gets addressed. Guy drives on Tomi, shoots an elbow to the throat, and gets a foul call.

You can’t pin fault on the players without asking how in the world do you let a run of the mill player light you up for 26 points in the first HALF before you make some ADJUSTMENTS?
Yeah that stings me the most dude having 26 before half and 32 for the game. Also they let Hoiberg play like he was prime J KIDD out there lol. He had anybody who tried to guard him on a string. A few years back Trent and Damonte would've ate both them dudes lunch. Bos locked Sandfort up some in the 2nd half but he cant guard the whole perimeter.

Tomi scored his only 3 points (I believe) with a couple minutes to go ...on a 3. Mirk is on a milk carton somewhere. Size matters only when you actually use it.

Their defense is designed to prevent shots at the rim, has been for years, and coming into this game they were literally #1 in the country in % of shots at the rim.

Our bigs struggled but I actually thought we did a good job penetrating their D. I bet you will be able to count on one hand at the end of the year how many teams get more points in the paint vs Nebraska than we did today.

Bad loss. Argue with a wall. Do not give two !!!!! how "good" or "better" Nebraska is this year.

This loss has happened way too often in Brad's tenure and continues to repeat itself every year since 22.

22 PSU, 23 Maryland, 24 USC, 25 Nebraska all at home.

Team is going to be fine, will get to the tourney but seeing this kind of effort, at home is inexcusable.

Cant give up straight line drives to a guy logging 9 minutes a game, Dre cannot get out rebounded on the block by Sam !!!!ing Hoiberg, bad call or not Tomi fouling a dude with 3 seconds left in the shot clock on an off line drive.

The program floor is raised back to an expectation we hoped for but what is its ceiling when this kind of !!!! happens every year?

Very much a "Im not half as mad as I am disappointed" piece of commentary but the rollercoaster stuff is exhausting. Win a home.

By all accounts, Ben is a good human being. I think by now it's clear that he just isn't going to be anything more than a complementary player at this level. I think at this point we need to accept who he is.

Good post. Play Man? Play Zone? Hey everybody, we are too soft and slow to play great defense no matter what defense we play. They dribbled around and through us all day long. That !!!!er #21 shot most of his threes wide open because he was way passed the three-point line, where nobody can guard him without charging at him and fouling. Nebraska is quick and much more athletic than Illinois, and they swarm to the ball with a stifling defense. Frankly, bad free-throw shooting hurt our chances as well. We worked our asses off to get it close at the end, but Nebraska has much better athletes than the Illini. Those here that said Nebraska is not a very good team are simply wrong. They will continue to have a very good year.
