It's also a closed loop system. Play 4 cupcakes, get everybody ranked, then play each other so all your losses are to "top teams".
Case in point, Alabama. Alabama made the playoff despite an embarrassing loss to a bad FSU team, losing at home to Oklahoma (a team that itself doesn't make it in without that win), and then getting demolished by Georgia. The reason? Their "gauntlet" of a schedule. What were their most impressive wins out of that "gauntlet"?

Georgia (in my mind invalidated by the more recent blowout to the same team)
Vandy
@ Mizzou
Tennessee

If Mizzou and Tennessee are not artificially inflated top-25 games all season, Alabama doesn't make the playoff, Oklahoma looks a lot weaker, and nobody talks about Vandy as a playoff team with a straight face. Iowa, Minn, Wash, are a tougher gauntlet than Vandy, Mizzou, Tenn. The committee should have put in both ND and BYU over Oklahoma and Alabama, tbh.

I argued for Alabama to be in the playoff. I was wrong.

Nebraska and Michigan playing tough. I hate both programs with the intensity of a thousand suns but I also enjoy the non-B1G meltdowns.

Also everyone point and laugh at USC and their lame excuse for tackling.

Michigan and Texas getting into a shootout now. Gotta wonder where this Michigan team is with someone besides Sherrone Moore as coach this season. Offense looks cleaner.

I look at it like this - the better the B1G looks, the better Illinois looks. One of these days we might be in a situation where Illinois is sitting on the CFP bubble and trying to snatch a spot that could also go to Vandy or Texas or Tennessee. Our rivals winning these games against other conferences, particularly against the SEC, will serve us well in future scenarios like that one.

I agree except for the fact that ESPN basically controls the entire playoff, and could simply just decide to exclude or include any team they wanted.

I can always enjoy these other games more after a win.

Today is a good day.

Do SEC defenses just stink?

Vandy scored 45 points each of their last 3 games. They have just 3 against Iowa at halftime.

Tennessee scored nearly 41 points per game this year and scored just 28 points against us (and I’m not told, we don’t have the best defense).

Texas A&M put up 31 against South Carolina, 38 against Missouri, 49 against LSU, 45 against Arkansas and I could go on, yet scored just 3 against Miami.
Been thinking about this all year. Why do I keep seeing highly ranked sec matchups where the score is 44-40? Every play seems like a big gain for the offense. And each QB usually has at least 2 it's. Doesn't make sense to me how teams that highly ranked five up so many points and have so many turnovers.

Don't forget IU

I can root for IU in football
but never ever in basketball .

I like the school . I hate the basketball program & fandom . my daughter went there . I paid that school over 100,000 in tuition . I can’t hate it

what Cig has done there in football is to me , the biggest story in college football in the past 75 years . It kinda hurts to say that .
