Just found this article. Came out 1/21, so before the Purdue game. Already had Wagler as a top-5 contender for BIG POY, with Yaxel as the front runner, and Braden Smith, Stirtz, and TKR as the other contenders.

I think Sandfort is also going to be a contender as well as Fears. I think the knock on Martinelli, Thornton, and Steinbach, and maybe even Stirtz by the time it's done, is going to be their teams aren't good enough. If you look at this award over the years, they're giving it to a star players from one of the top 4-5 teams in the conference, not guys on teams in the middle of the league or worse. The only real exception to that over the last 20 years is Luka Garza's first one in 2019-2020.

Can we all agree that we should probably stop calling him a freshman? I mean, other than being 18 years old and it being his first year in college, there isn’t anything about him that resembles a freshman anymore. This dude is a veteran!

How are these awards done? From what I knew there’s a collection of voters and in case the number of votes “split” that’s where co comes in.

7/11 weeks there’s been a “co” so that’s obviously not how it works.

With 5 weeks left in the regular season, he can tie Kofi for the all-time record with 3 more. 4+ and the record is all his...

amazing that you can have one of the best performances in conference history and not win player of the week
Yup, just on the one game alone Keaton should have gotten every vote possible for player of the week. Kinda like having an asterisk next to his accomplishment. Does something never done before but has to share award, smh.

When we played MD we had 17 assists as a team.
MD had 48 points against MSU. 46 points on the road against one of the top tier big ten teams is just more impressive. How many of Fears assists came in garbage time?

Having at least 15 assists has happened 6 times in Big Ten play. Last time in 2010 by McCamey (16)

45 points hasn’t been scored in a big ten game since 1994 and on the road

Smith started the season with about a lap head start on POY based purely on reputation. Those who voted him preseason POY are unlikely to change their vote unless he falls off a cliff. If he wins, maybe in their minds it validates their preseason vote. 🤷‍♂️

Keaton's game on a shirt...

Absolutely bought the crewneck sweatshirt version of this as soon as I saw it was out. I can't wait for it to get here. Our AD went to Purdue, so I plan on wearing this around/past his office as often as I can.

That may result from Izzo lobbying for recognition of his guard. No way is there any fair comparison between the two performances. Winning at Purdue solely due to an all-world game by Keaton, a freshman?

This will surely turn into bulletin board material. However, I hope it doesn't spur the other Illini to take a half a step back and "let KW do it," as we saw the Bulls do with MJ....
