I really don’t like that decision. The Spring Game is for the fans.
Fall wins are for the fans too. As a fan, I'd love to see a spring game (and I loved the years when they played spring games in Chicago and Springfield) but I'd also rather not tip our hand by giving any clues to our opponents to study. Preserve the fall wins at the expense of our spring entertainment.

He and Bielema work really, really well together, really glad to be keeping him here.

He'll take a P4 head coaching job if he can get one, but those are immensely competitive and hard to get. This is about keeping him from other OC jobs as well as G5 head jobs, which these days would be a massive pay cut.
On the flip side,

Hauck is at $700k
Patricia - $3.75M (OSU)
Haines - $3.0M (IU)
Hill - $2.5M (MI)
Parker - $2.0M (Iowa)
Lynn - $2.0M (PSU)
Rossi - $1.7M (MSU)
Aurich - $1.1M (Nebraska)
West/East coast - not sure

WI, MN, PU - in the ball park of Illinois.

Not really surprising but Illinois still has a ways to go in the arms race.

Bobby makes just under 300k as HC at Montana.

The first 3 games are UAB, Duke, SIU. What are you really preventing anyone from seeing that won’t be shown in those 3 games? All 3 games Illinois should be heavily favored in. If they were opening with Mizzou I’d understand it. But not those 3 teams.

I think the new defense is just an excuse. I think Bret knows some teams have gigantic crowds for their spring games and Illinois never does, so he doesn’t want any “look how small the crowd is” stuff to be promoted on social media. Same reason they dumped Midnight Madness in the mid 2010s…tho given how good basketball is now you’d think they would at least bring that back

Correct but Montana isn't Illinois' competition.

I liked Henry on the staff but he wasn't worth what he was being paid. Hauck seems like a better value, time will tell if it pays off. But it is a value gamble - the entire defensive staff.

Poeta got canned essentially for jeopardizing Nike money. Probably really poor timing too as I believe that contract is soon to be renewed.

Don't mess with the money.

My point was we doubled his salary to come here to do what he wanted to do. We aren't paying him 700k because we don't have the money to go higher. If Bret were going to hire say a Wilcox or Stoops he would have had the money to pay them like Lunney.

And this is the direction of the new Nike contracts. They go far beyond what Illinois once signed.

We're a more appealing proposition to an apparel company right now than we have been since before apparel sponsorships were a thing.

And our deal is expiring this summer isn't it?

We signed that at the absolute nadir of Not Ideal, one would hope we've got some more money coming in the next cycle.

I guess I don't entirely believe this. Higher to a small extent, yes, I'm sure Illinois could do it. Paying a DC 1.7M or more like other P2 programs pointed out (and select others), I don't believe it. The same thing happened in the portal, Illinois is semi-competitive, but they are in the mix with MN, WI, etc...middle of the road. Not a complaint or a bad place to be but....

Illinois is doing very well "all things considered" my point is not mis-management. It's they are moving in the right direction but the debt still exists, a small market, etc. Maybe I type this to manage my own expectations?

Here's one example of a challenge for Illinois:

I wouldn't be shocked to see other states like Iowa and Indiana follow. No way can/will the state of Illinois do that, they are in massive debt as well.

I agree with all of this. I think it should be a nice benefit to Illinois athletics, I believe as you, this summer or sooner.

The fact that a new agreement has not yet been signed says volumes. We will get paid.

And if he does well, then there's plenty of wiggle room to keep increasing his contract and other assistants. Lunney is getting a raise almost every year now

Agreed - but Wicox or Stoops would command a number twice the amoung what Lunney will get paid. We are all the way up to the middle of the B1G 10 with just over $90 mm of football revenue. But we do not come close to the $10 - $11 mm for on field staff (excluding HC comp) that the top 25 schools are spending.

I will say this... we are narrowing the gap.

That simplifies my record prediction: Obviously we will go 9-3, or 8-4 if we stumble at Nebraska.
