Chicago Cubs 2026

That had me worried. Nico is the bomb! He is all that and a bag of chips!

You feel good with him at second base. His defense makes up for 15 more homers, 70 more strikeouts, and 60 points lower BA that a slugger would give us.
He was in the running for the batting title last year. Did you mean OPS?

No, I meant that a slugger would give us more HRs, but also worse defense, more strikeouts, lower batting average. I'll take Nico every time.

Fabulous sports day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cubs sign Nico, Illini in Elite Eight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cubs win would have been awesome, but they have 161 more games.

Do the PCA and Nico signings mean Happ and Seiya are in their final year with Cubs?
Does this also mean that Shaw will be traded eventually?
The rumor was that Nico was gone because they signed Bregman. These are new and strange Cub front office actions. I personally wouldn't pour a ton of money into Happ. Who knows what they might do??????

Shaw is making very little in pro athlete dollars. No hurry on him.

Hard to see them spending any more money until a new agreement is reached with the players and what the spending guardrails will be. This is probably Happ's last season with the Cubs, I don't know about Suzuki.

I HATE the way the game today has turned into dingers or strikeouts
One reason to appreciate Nico. Rizzo tried to hit with 2 strikes. Bellinger was good. There are a few with a brain. I guess Rizzo is no longer a good example.
Put the ball in play, you never know what might happen.

Shaw's bat is a big black hole that is already costing the Cubs games. Last night, he left 4 runners on base by grounding into a double play and popping up on the infield. He's left 3 runners on base in 2 other games so far this season. Suzuki can't come back fast enough.

Strong start for Cam Smith? He had one really good month last year. Not saying he won’t be good, but I don’t consider 140 games, .235 (108 of 460), 60 runs, 22 2B, 3 3B, 10 HR, 52 RBI, 9 SB particularly strong. Take away his July last year and for his short career he’s at 114 games, .218 (81 of 371), 46 runs, 17 2B, 3 3B, 6 HR, 36 RBI, 7 SB.

I have much more faith Caissie will be a good player, and he has had a nice start to his season. But we’re talking 5 games. Plus I like the start Cabrera has had too.

So Cade Horton didn't even last as long as Justin Steele did last year. Sigh.

Not good. Not good at all.

Threw a pitch, signalled to the dugout, and walked off the mound by the trainer in the 2nd inning.

"Right forearm discomfort".
Oh boy. Forearm discomfort can be pain radiating from the elbow. Obviously, not always the case. It could be an early sease strain, which isn't the end of the world.

Best case scenario, cramp and they pulled him out of an abundance of caution.

Second best, muscle strain(miss a month).

Let's not go to the worst case.

In Steele's situation, he was having that discomfort come up three times a year in the forearm. He visited the IL quite a few times. They figured it was best to go in and deal with it for the long term vs putting a bandage on it every two months.

Fingers crossed.

Tangentially related, I really appreciate Montemurro as a reporter. Illinois graduate, too, if I recall!
