Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread

Florida clearly has no issue loaded up on talent. This dude definitely wont start but will be a valuable bench piece.

With our overseas success, not sure why we can’t do the same. Would help to fill out a realistic 9 deep.

1. Florida's roster looks a lot like ours right now - a lot of really great pieces up top, but really only 8 players that nobody is worried about being a rotation piece (Aberdeen needs a waiver and that's not looking great for them)

2. Its been said 999999999 times that we will likely add another player

How I see it:

them and Duke are the clear top 2 (preseason).

Then it’s splitting hairs between Michigan / Tennessee / Illinois / UCONN.

If I had to rank it: Florida, Duke, Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, UCONN. (off of the assumption that Morez is gone)

I’m just not sure Michigan has that number 1 scorer (which Yaxel was). They’ll likely still be great defensively… but it’s unrealistic to think Yaxel / Morez / Mara —> McCoy / Estrella / Thiam isn’t somewhat of a downgrade.

So we are obviously going to be referring to one Quintin Coleman a lot in the coming year, which is a terrific problem to have... anybody else having a few seconds of confusion every time "Coleman" is referenced and it doesn't mean Coleman Hawkins? It's been a while for CoHawk, but we had him for 4 years so the association is strong.

Motion to refer to our talented freshman as QC?
Just "Q"

Trust that nothing relating to Cole Kelly will go without notice. Already being heralded as the next “must get” recruit.

Though on this one I suppose I’d be safe to subscribe to the @ChiefGritty newsletter in which history will again repeat itself that he’ll go to Duke and everyone will be pissed, but then we’ll just end up with someone better instead.
Freshmen are a little different, but still, yeah.

For the record, his team doesn't even play in the second division of the Adriatic League, they only play in the local Slovenian league, so that's at a relatively low level, albeit an older experienced pro.

All of our guys were relatively experienced in the Adriatic League top division (Petro the most experienced, so take it all with a grain of salt, but it's a higher level of play).

“Todd Golden expects Denzel Aberdeen to be cleared at Florida“

I believe the argument with him is that he came back and played through injury which limited him during his freshman year, and I believe I've read that everybody has been losing those cases. No question he played too much and too late for a medical redshirt by the normal rules.

Michigan state is better than UConn, imo.

Tennessee - I think they should be 3. You know they’re gonna rebound and play defense. Pretty much guarantees when it comes to their coach. They are a bit smaller, but athleticism wise there’s no drop off.

Then you add in as much offensive firepower as they’ve added, it’s hard to think they aren’t title contenders. Not great retention, but that’s pretty much meaningless if you can get the newcomers to buy in (see: Michigan).

Ignoring that the idea is the staff will see Brown play this summer and consider a Euro based on it...Who do you think is taking that spot before then?
If you want names, the truth is I don’t know. I’m too ignorant, and anybody who isn’t on the staff likely is as well.

But I do know that “who” exists. If Florida can convince the guy listed to come play that role from overseas (despite being an even more loaded team than us), then I’m not sure why Illinois won’t be able to do the same.

Brad also said it’s invaluable to have everyone here for the summer for multiple reasons yet here we are with said player missing. Why? What are we waiting on?

So you're posting we need a 9th over and over yet acknowledge the staff is aware of the market and our roster?

Its the number 1 team vs the number 4 team and you're posting this all because FL just signed a 22 yr old forward who landed 2 spots down the Slovenian league leaderboard behind a guy that averaged 10 ppg at central Connecticut State 2 years ago & 7 spots behind a frmr NC A&T player in rebounds?

How certain are you that's a upgrade from Zens, Brown or Jakstys? How certain are you that the staff hasn't thought through this all?

This is 100% just a gut feeling on my part, but I wonder if the player we add later winds up being Ty Rogers?

I can’t imagine there is another P5 willing to offer him a bigger role and more pay than we would be. And while I don’t know for certain my impression is that we could probably offer him more to be our 9th/10th guy (with a chance to earn a bigger role) than he could get as a starter at a mid major.

But besides Yaxel on pure offense those other guys just played as better versions of their game. It’s not like morez went from scoring 20 a game and same with Mara. They were underutilized players.

Also think everyone wants to assume Juke is Yaxel 2.0 but he was projected an early second round pick, Yaxel was a top 20 guy last year coming back. I hated Yaxel but he was a really special player.

100% title contenders I just think they are 1 of 8 not this juggernaut.

I think we need to let this ship sail. He's an undersized 4 who has no jump shot for B1G speed/closeouts. And unless Andrej drastically improves his perimeter shot we'll struggle to play them concurrently ala the issue with Andrej/Kylan combo this year (post-the fracture).

Competition levels are pretty awful if you watch the games. Prep schools definitely better tune-up for college ball.
Yeah, he’s not going to find a lot of resistance continuing in Central Illinois. The prep circuit will consistently put him against high major talent. The B1G will be less of a shock.
It’s harder to identify weaknesses and work on your game when you are always the best player on the court.

It’s also going to be tough to replicate what Yaxel gave them defensively, which was IMO, really the difference maker for them last year.
6’10” POA defenders don’t grow on trees, especially ones who are equally versatile on offense. Guys like that tend to get drafted…early.

As a side note, toured the Duke campus recently as part of a college visit for my nephew. It looks like Hogwarts.
Story is that Mr. Duke offered Princeton a ton of dough, on condition that they rename the school after him. They said no, so he built his own university, matching the style and several of the buildings (complete with soft concrete so it would age faster).
Most of this is probably myth, but it's a good story.
Like calling Stanford "the Leland Stanford JUNIOR University."

Thiam is a beast. I didn't know Michigan had him.
