I don’t have an issue with LeBron taking a lower salary, though I am surprised the amount was that low. But the examples you gave are different somewhat in that they are players taking less money where they are at to have more resources to bring in other talent. LeBron is actually moving to a new team chasing the ring. But at his age, I can’t blame him for wanting a chance to spend his final years playing in meaningful games.
Overall I’m not a big LeBron fan, but him taking less money now hasn’t made me any less (or would it be more) of not a fan of his. I’ll be rooting for him to fail, but that has nothing to do with his smaller contract.
Every situation is not the same - I understand context is king and we all crave loyalty.
While I dislike a lot of LeBron things, I have sympathy for him on the “well it’s different because he left” argument. Like duh, Cleveland is not only terribly run, it’s Cleveland - ofcourse a player like Steph in SF has better odds of getting good players come to him (either in drafting, trading, or free agency) by a competent organization and just pure geography. I would point out Brady also took a salary cut to join Tampa Bay too in moving teams.
The Heat example is the one that I will always be critical of - that was the easy way forward. But if he was truly just “ring chasing” there were lots better options for him than cleveland the second time, LA (people forget they were a mess when he joined), and now Philly - this sixers title quest is not some cakewalk.
I would have been massively critical if he took this same pay cut and joined OKC, San Antonio or New York
