The whole firing/hiring sequence was a bumbling, stumbling mess. None of us are wise to all the details, but from the outside it just looked like misplay after misplay. We weren't shooting for the moon with our candidate list, and after all that durdling, we ended up with our third choice...
I really hope you're right. Unfortunately, there's an even simpler explanation that also checks all the boxes - that no one is driving this clown car and we'll botch this hire like we've botched all other hires in recent memory...
