I will criticize Groce all day long, but I'm going to stick up for him a little here. Groce was a player's coach --definitely soft and tried to work with guys collaboratively. That probably works ok with competitive guys who are self-motivated, but fails when guys need to be pushed. To the...
There are haves, and have nots.
Kind of cool they have a dorm that accommodates their height. Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of schools have done something similar.
I think most of that talk settled around Rice's playing style and the team needing him to take tough shots. We were definitely challenged, offensively. Chemistry can mean many different things depending on who you're talking to, though.
Both seem reasonable. As a homer, that looks terrible!! It would say we're not likely to make that dance even with a healthy roster, which none of us believe.
We have a lot to prove.
So it looks like we'll have a lively competition at PG in a couple seasons. We've got DaMonte, Frazier, and TeJon all in the span of 2 classes.
Any thoughts?
You shouldn't be. It's very common in sports to work on strength in the off season. It may take them a little while to get used to their new capabilities, but it will be an improvement in the long run.
My 2 or 3 cents:
1. These issues only come into play with elite recruits, and as you get closer to the #1 player in the nation, the value goes up dramatically. If the rumors are true, for example, Drummond was worth $150-$200k as a collegiate signee. No clue if that amount is reliable, but it...
That was a fantastic team. But you aren't going to have a legendary PG very often. We also had what I consider one of our better coaches in Lon Kruger.
I'd go a bit farther than that. We know injuries were a major issue, but from a fair weather fan's perspective, it was an awful continuation of an awful trend. I'd say it was a bad product 2 years ago when we missed the dance. It was downright dismal last year.
Here's our 4 seasons under Groce...
Agreed. However, at the elite level where kids realistically are looking at scholarships and possible NBA aspirations, there's maybe a 25% chance that 3 and 4 are swapped.
We should have the personnel to be in the 4-6 range. The thing that's bugged me most about the last two years is how we've looked as a unit, even with injuries. A good coach will turn a team into more than the sum of the pieces.
Here's my reality check for you. Since Whitman has come on board, he has been pragmatic with Groce, and Groce, despite coming off a horrible season of both injuries and performance, has delivered spectacular recruiting results.
What tends to lead to a coaches firing is poor results from poor...
