2016 MLS Thread

#1
Starting this thread for those who want to talk about the 2016 MLS season. Don't know how many if any on here really follow it that closely but figured I might just in case.

Season started today with Toronto FC defeating the Red Bulls 2-0, New York City FC defeating Chicago 4-3, and Orlando City and Real Salt Lake drawing 2-2.

Portland unfurled their championship banner and are hosting the Columbus Crew right now on ESPN. Seattle hosts Sporting KC tonight at 6:00 PM CT on FS1 and the L.A. Galaxy host DC United at 9:00 PM CT on UniMas.

I may post the TV schedules as I do with the Premier League matches each week.

I'll lurk. I've read that St. Louis may, at some undetermined time, add a team. If so, I'll may try to follow them.

Andrew Hauptman is the worst owner of all major league sports in North America, if not the world. No hyperbole. The worst, hands down.

Me and my buddies got so into section 8 for Fire games for a while it was ridiculous. Started way back our moms switched off driving us there and sitting in the parking lot while we went to participate haha.

Section 8 is fun. Unfortunately, cheering for the Fire during the Hauptman reign has been pitifully hard. Andi (Cakes) is a pathetic owner. He's very fortunate MLS doesn't have relegation and just as fortunate that it's run as a collective.

Fire play DC United @ 4 today. Accam & Goosens out. Will the suckage continue? I think so. Nevertheless, am strangely compelled to watch this ongoing trainwreck. #HauptmanOut

A lot of midweek buzz locally about a potential new MLS team here with a new purpose built stadium. The ownership group is headed by two NBA owners, both with local roots. The neighborhood minor league team has outgrown their ~2000 capacity venue and is moving to a ~7000 capacity stadium this year, so the market seems to be present. No time frame or agreements in place but it's a nice concept to muse on.

A little off topic - Detroit FC (NPSL) will be playing an International Friendly against a level 6 FC United of Manchester club, so I suppose they are close to that level. Last night they sold out 7400+. First game at new venue, but still a good crowd for semi-pro. This bodes well for MLS locally, I hope. Pics in article. (Disclosure - I am like a kid with a new toy - Futball)

And where might Baja Ontario be? I know Baja and I know Ontario, CA.

Welp, the dumpster fire that is the Fire continues unabated. Rumors circulating that Hauptman may be forced to sell by either the league or the Bronfmans (marital infidelity). I pray it's true. Why else would the league choose Chicago to host the 2017 All Star game? (yes, I know it's going to be in Soldier Field).

That's step one. Step two is finding a way out of Bridgeview.

MLS' inability to make progress in the Chicago market has really been something to behold.

I'm a very casual observer. The people I talk to who really follow the team are on like stage 27 of the five stages of grief. I've never seen a fanbase hate their team that much, and I'm an Illini message board poster.

We love our team, or what it once stood for. We despise Hauptman, with every fiber in our being. He's wrecked the club. Here's hoping we get an ownership change and fast. Long overdue. New ownership willing to invest in the team, facilities and the organization. If that happens, the team and the fans will be back.

As to Bridgeview, the MLS Chicago franchise is stuck with it for a good while. AFAIC, Toyota Park is the least of the Fire's problems. Sure, it needs freshening up, including paving the lots. The location is not ideal, but it's not bad. And it's a true soccer specific stadium. A very good venue for watching a match.
