How is price not standing on the top step getting the ump's attention regardless of the situation? It's a game ending play, what does he have to lose? It doesn't matter if he saw it, if he could hear the phone, or if it's even an obvious correct call. He screwed the pooch on that. He should have been getting the umpire's attention the second Carpenter crossed home. Why weren't any of the players on the field saying anything? Why weren't the 10-20 guys watching from the top step of the dugout saying anything? That ball wasn't deep in the corner where no one could see it, it was 20-30 feet off the line. Plenty of blame to go around, IMO. That being said, the point of the rule is to get the call right. I think there's going to have to be some kind of rule change on that for next year, although I do understand the reasoning for the current language in the rule. You've got the team celebrating, fireworks, and fans heading to the exits. You don't want to wait 30 seconds and then all of a sudden have to review. In summary, dumb rule, but kind of a tricky situation. Bryan Price is dumb. If the cardinals take the 2nd wildcard by a game it will suck for SF.
