Art Briles out at Baylor

WOW.

This is not unlike the Beckman situation, where there is an investigation into the football program that the University has just gotten the results of, but has yet to be made public.

The difference is, Briles is the messiah to that program and you'd think they would have done anything to hold onto him.

You can't hold onto someone who has covered up numerous rape cases/convictions, players getting arrested, and still expect to keep your job. Especially after the basketball program 10-15 years ago had a coach cover up murder. They had no choice.

Obviously I don't disagree, but I can't help but feel a little bad for their fans. They just went from Oregon to Indiana with the stroke of a pen.

Our empathy belongs with the victims of the players crimes, which is a far bigger deal than football, but that was just my initial reaction.

Feel terrible for the victims. Everything was swept under the rug, and Briles had the SEC mentality - just win baby.

Have you spent much time in Texas? It would take a lot for me to feel sorry for people that delusional. That said, I will go back to the basketball recruiting thread to obsess over how a 17 year olds college decision will make or break my day.

It makes me just a wee bit happy that a school with supposedly deeply religious convictions has the 2 largest cover ups in recent history for the sake of athletic programs. Hypocrisy galore.

Whether it's a massive deal to become a head coach in December or an OC gig two years from now when the storm has blown over a bit will depend on how bad this report looks for Briles, but either way I suspect his next job is in the NFL.

I would imagine Baylor will go interim for this year, though if Art AND Kendal Briles leave it could be tough.

You always figured Kendal, Philip Montgomery or Dino Babers would be the next man up if Briles left for a bigger job, but is Baylor willing to stay in the family now? Are those guys willing to take the job after what has happened?

Good. There's no room (or there shouldn't be any room) for that in modern sport.

I bet a whole lot more schools are looking at this and should or should be worried about this. Look at Nebraskas few sexual assaults that magically disappeared. Briles is a genius at football but not much of a human I'm guessing. He got what he deserved.

How quickly do coaches start to circle and look to get commits to back out? It's inevitable that they smell blood in the water and will pick Baylor apart. Add this with any sanctions, Baylor may be down for a long time.

Let's just dispense with this now. No violations of NCAA rules occurred here and Baylor should not and will not face NCAA sanction.

But that doesn't matter. The damage is done. Without Briles, Baylor is nothing.

There are reports that Baylor already retained a law firm and notified the NCAA of potential violations, so I wouldn't be so quick to say they won't face any sanctions.

I know your title is "IlliniInTexas" but if you know much about Baylor as a university, their "religious ties" and close affiliation with anything Christian other than in general association (to continue receiving "Christian" donations) is basically gone. They're no more Christian than any other Big 12 school in my perspective.

I'm not sure why you would be happy in the least bit about this whole situation. This falls on Briles, the AD, and other individuals involved in the coverup and shouldn't fuel your desire to see people or specific religions exposed as hypocrites. :tsk:

Maybe there's more to the story that we don't yet know. But letting criminals run amok in your program is not a violation of NCAA rules.

I don't think he would do that to Syracuse, but my god, could you imagine if he were at Illinois right now?

I don't think Babers has stayed anywhere for more than 2 years so who knows. Loyalty is not such a thing in college sports. I would never have thought we would see a basketball coach sign a contract and leave a school for another job before ever coaching a game and that happened.
