Following on Illini80's post above, it was Ryan Squire on SportsTalk (May 21 - link below). Ryan is the Associate AD in charge of Compliance at UI, who IIRC had previously called the Abrams case a "slam dunk." Again, none of the conspiracy theories were valid, the case for Mike Thorne was more difficult and required making a strong case, also going through the conference first. But once the case got to the NCAA, Ryan Squire mentioned that it was a "very quick decision." On Abrams, part of the delay is due to UI not having the urgency to submit early, they think it is a pretty clear cut case and Abrams will get his 6th year. So no NCAA conspiracy, no reason to worry, and it is just a matter to time. BTW, getting a 5th year approval requires just approval from the conference compliance office, does not require NCAA approval. Interesting comments by Ryan Squire also on the NCAA ruling on Ahmad Starks, getting denied on his hardship waiver application. According to Squire, UI was not surprised by the ruling, they knew it was going to be tough to get it approved, and the UI/Starks case was missing a couple of crucial elements that would have been necessary. This is contrary to popular message board comments that the NCAA did us wrong and the NCAA decision on Starks was not expected by UI. Interview with Ryan Squire starts after the 1:17:30 mark below: http://www.news-gazette.com/audio/2016-05-21/podcast-saturday-sportstalk-05-21-16.html
