The summer of 2000 I was between my jr and sr yr at Indiana State. I had an internship at Star One Rehab in Princeton, IN. They worked with the Toyota plant doing pre-employment physicals and a conditioning program for employees once they were hired. I told the following story to one of the PTs there...sadly, I don't remember his name! Three surgeons who went to high school together had not seen each other for years, and reunited at their 25 year high school reunion. Anxious to impress the other two, the first said "I had a really interesting case. Farmer, horrible accident, got his hand caught in a tractor attachment. I was in surgery for over 8 hours setting the bones, reattaching ligaments, restoring vascular supply...he just sent me a thank you card, said he was harvesting again this fall!" The second wasn't going to be outdone. "The accident was horrible, sad, really." he began. "A 16 year old, beautiful young woman, hit by a drunk driver. Ten hours...reconstruction, grafts, plastics, initially I just wanted her to live. About halfway through I just felt she deserved better and I kept going. Two months ago, she won the beauty pageant at her local county fair!" The third surgeon picked up his bourbon, took a small sip, and placed the glass back on the table in manner that, somehow, suggested he had something to say. "I didn't have much to work with..." he began, "...or much time." He looked down, he looked up as he took a deep breath, then exhaled slowly. "I took an @ssho!e and a red sweater, and I made a college basketball coach!" At this point, I looked at the PT and expected a laugh, at least a grin. Nothing. Stone-faced, he said "I'm an IU fan, you know that, right?" Some people!
