I'm in favor of 12 teams, and I love the proposed format.....using home field for at least one round of the play-offs. And it absolutely provides the best shot for Bielema and the Illini to take part in a national championship playoff.

At issue for me is the fair distribution of "invitations" to play in the 12-team tourney. I'd go with something like this:

* The five Power 5 champions
* The top ranked Group of 5 team
* And then six at-large bids --- but perhaps capping the number of teams from any single league at 3 or 4
* Notre Dame simply needs to be ranked in the Top 10-12 each year to make it

It would add so much excitement to the program to be in the PLAYOFF CONVERSATION during our late October and November games!!!

I think tOSU's Gene Smith has it right --let the current contract run out and price it in tiered pieces. There will be more competition for the rights, and it puts ESPN-SEC in a tougher position. There's a LOT of money involved, and going to a 12 team format that has no counter-balance to the SEC's power should be a no-go. An 8 team format would be a huge bargaining chip to hold against the SEC.

"SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, a key member of the CFP expansion working group, maintains the league did not contact Texas and Oklahoma". While it may not have been direct, I'm highly skeptical of that statement. I wouldn't rule it out, but I can imagine a lot of white lie in it. Even if it is true, it was done secretly, which I'm sure ticked off pretty much every other conference, and takes away the trust that the 12 team format was done in good faith.

Will the Big 10 and Pac-12 dig in to have the Rose Bowl traditional tie in and January 1 date?
What nonsense. There's more money to be made in premium seating playing it at the new Rams and Chargers stadium in prime time the first Saturday of the new year. That's a no-brainer, you absolutely have to do that.

I can't decide which is worse, college football playoff expansion or MLB playoff expansion.

It is the logic that created the 2008 financial crisis, with fan interest and demand in legacy sports standing in for housing prices as something the powers that be assume cannot decline. Well, they can, and in the sports context what we're going to see is essentially hyperinflation, more and more production of games (now: playoff expansion, coming soon: expansion teams in the pros) to chase the declining value of each individual game, just making the problem worse.

Preserving the strength of the game for generations to come would require turning down the sack with the dollar sign on it because it's incompatible with the long term health of the core business. That is unfortunately not the world we live in anymore.

How so? CFP expansion to my mind has lots of benefits, and makes the crescendo to the season more interesting. They'll be more games worth following late in the season, and many more arguments over resumes and how dangerous a particular team would be if it's performed below expectations but has a high ceiling. And on the plus side, more kids (and fans) with more memories of making it to the CFP and having a shot at the NC.

Btw, I agree with your cynicism that Presidents and administrators will follow the short term money over long term promotion and fan satisfaction. Like any business, you vote with your $, and $ win. In this case, though, I think the demand is in the right place, and fans deserve to have more teams able to win their way to the CFP. IMO there's still a lot of weight, right or wrongly, given to the brand name programs.

Can't push the expanded playoff deal across the finish line.

I'm very glad this keeps stalling but we know remarkably little about why.

Is it over splitting up the media rights beyond ESPN? Is it just because the other four have such distrust of the SEC that they can't work productively with them anymore? Are models being proposed and shot down?

We know the vibes are bad and that the SEC/ESPN axis has the rest of the sport spooked, but that's a pretty limited window into the process.

Likely money and power.
Whoever has the power wants to make sure to keep it.
Whoever has the power wants to make sure they get the money.

I like the conference champion from B10, Pac12, ACC, SEC and B12 plus two top ranked non Power 5 team and next highest ranked P5 team.

This would make the conference championships meaningful.

Money should be split equally by team. I know this screws ND but they can join the ACC.

I would make this contingent on the start paying all Div1 football players. Right now the star QB gets the money and most players get nothing.

I don't like more than 8 teams because because I prefer getting this over with by 2nd week of January. I would be OK with only taking the top ranked non power team and expanding the at large P5 to two slots.

If you want to go to 12 or 16 teams then you should get rid of the conference championship games.

Agree. The fatted calf, goose that lays the golden egg or the meal ticket is football and to a lesser degree basketball. They pay for all the women and men programs that operate in the red. Follow the money trail. Conference championship games are revenue producers

I would be in favor with eight teams: the P5 champions, the top ranked non Power 5 and the next two highest ranked teams, but I would require all P5 conferences to play the same amount of conference games.

I'm all for P5 conference champions + 3 next highest ranked teams. So probably ND and 2 SEC teams every year but that's where we are already anyway without any other conferences getting a chance.

Ultimately I think all G5 teams get absorbed into regional super conferences in the next couple of years anyways. Academies and ND will stay independent because ND is pretty much guaranteed one of the non champion spots every year.

ND history

Lou Holtz
Bob Davie (ND assistant) 5 seasons 35-25
Tyrone Willingham (Stanford HC) 3 seasons 21-15
Charlie Weiss (NFL assistant) 5 seasons 35-27
Brian Kelly

No guarantee the post Kelly era will be kind to ND. Hiring Marcus Freeman is big risk. He has never been a head coach. DC under Kelly at Cincinatti and ND.

He was Fickell's DC at Cincy. Was likely playing at OSU when Kelly was at Cincy

Its not easy to be a power5 head coach. Even more challenging when expectation is to be top 10 and qualify for BCS regularly.

USC hiring Riley and LSU hiring Kelly were more impressive and safer hires. I think ND should have pursued Fickell - however I doubt they wanted to pay market rate for a BCS coach ($10m/year).

Freeman will be the highest profile minority coach in NCAA. I hope he succeeds but he will earn it. ND does not have history of firing coaches before contract ends so if he got a 5 year deal he will have time to prove himself.
