I'm not sure what happened, but right after the game ended last night it started raining. I live in Phoenix. We were not expecting rain. Then I heard thunder. Then the winds came and knocked over all my patio chairs. I thought, "Oh no. Must be the apocalypse coming!". Then, somebody shot off a gun in my neighborhood. I thought, "Oh great. Now the crazies are loose." I reluctantly went to sleep after much trouble with the thoughts of "Did that really happen?" stuck in my head. The lightning, thunder, and high winds went on all last night. This morning I woke up and looked outside. It was the most beautiful sunrise, with shades of red and Cubby blue. The air smelled a little bit sweeter. The world felt a little bit lighter, as if the weight of a century-plus long curse had been lifted. It was like in a movie when the evil thing in the universe gets defeated and all the blackness dissipates and the world goes back into the light. November 2, 2016 will be remembered forever with great fondness by those who believed for so long, knew unrelenting dissappointment, but still held onto hope when everything seemed hopeless. It's the dawn of a new day. A day where the Cubs are no longer the punchline of jokes, are no longer "the lovable losers", and where there is no "Wait till next year!". Next year is here.
