Going to be honest. I don't think Malone is a bad get for UNC.

He won an NBA championship only 3 years ago and he runs a legitimately good offense that will work at the college level. Plus he has the recruiting pitch of being able to run an NBA offense that won a championship with Jokic and Murray recently.

This isnt a Bill Belichick situation where you're hiring a 70 year old. I think Malone is a better !!! than Donovan would have been and he's a better version of Kevin Young who got the BYU job.

Obviously, you want the Oats, Lloyd, or May type of guy but they are all at schools that can pony up a ton of money and have buyouts.
He won't have a walking triple double to help with that though.

Malone took over in Denver the same year as Jokic's rookie year. Jokic is incredible but Malone had a hand in his development and building the offense around him.

The first thing I would do if I was Malone would be too try to poach Mirk and tell him I would use him just like Jokic.

You may end up being 100% correct, BUT it’s a tough claim for UNC to take credit for the hire when the AD made the following comment when the position opened. It may be the case of both a blue blood’s embarrassment, and a good coach taking the job.

To go from essentially saying we have to hire a firm because too many people will be begging for the job, to hiring an ESPN personality and out of work coach despite his credentials is embarrassing.

“Well, we know we’ve got the most highly sought after job in the country,” Cunningham said. “I mean, the history, the tradition, and the success of this program is second-to-none. We will be inundated with requests for consideration. The first thing we’re going to do, which we’ve already done, is to be contracted with Turnkey Sports. Chad Chatlos is going to assist us in the search. That will be the process. A lot of people say ‘you should know all the coaches’ and ‘you should be able to do that’. Well, when a job like this comes open, there are so many requests.”

I like the Malone hire. How many coaches who won NBA titles then took college jobs? I think North Carolina looks at themselves as a pro sports program, so why not go get one of the top NBA coaches? This isn’t a retread NBA coach like Woodson/Musselman coming back to college. It’s an elite NBA coach that just recently won an NBA Finals by developing his own core team.

I don’t think Belichik has worked bc the game has passed him by. But Malone I think will work immediately. It should be easy to win at North Carolina with a competent coach and Malone is more than just competent
