Battery. (a) A person commits battery if he or she knowingly without legal justification by any means (1) causes bodily harm to an individual or (2) makes physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with an individual.

Assault. (a) A person commits an assault when, without lawful authority, he or she knowingly engages in conduct which places another in reasonable apprehension of receiving a battery

There is no “they were playing a game” exception to the battery statute.

You can operate within the rules and fair expectations of the sport. But any conduct that falls far outside the normal bounds of the sport is going to veer quickly into A&B territory.

This is correct. There's a legal doctrine at play in physical sports called implied consent. When you play football, your act of playing the game is enough to imply consent to the contact typical of a football game, such as tackling. That's why you can punch your opponent in a boxing match, but can't punch your annoying co-worker at the office Christmas party. Once the contact goes beyond what is normal within the scope of the sport, then your implied consent no longer operates as a shield to the offending party.

Pretty clearly, this type of contact is not within the scope of a baseball game.
