im confused as to how the big 18 could possible use a 9 game season to determine a
conference champion? it seems we could very well have three undefeated teams and/or
3 one loss teams. do we still have a conference championship game? how are those
teams selected? this is the last year of two divisions?, what's next?

There are no divisions anymore. Ties will be separated by CFP rankings.

The Big Ten Championship game will now always be between two teams already guaranteed a spot in the CFP, and have seeding implications at the very most.

It will remain a showpiece championship event in the same way the Chicago Tribune remains a newspaper: for as long as the consumer can be fooled into still paying.

Reminder that we still don't have a tie-breaking procedure for the Big Ten Championship Game. With Big Ten Media Days (July 23-25) right around the corner, perhaps we'll hear something then. Not that I expect IL to be in the mix for the title game, but with this new mega-league where everyone avoids 8 teams on their schedule, I'm looking forward to little late-November drama with the standings.

By delaying the announcement of a tie-breaker it is much easier for the B1G to declare Michigan the winner. That is likely to be much more difficult to design an ostensible tie-breaker to accomplish this year. /s (or should it be /i?)

I'm guessing USC because both are storied programs and the uniqueness of a new member of the B1G playing a traditional B1G powerhouse.

Honestly, I think USC is going to be much better this year. However, I could see them losing to LSU, Mich, Minn, Wisconsin, Penn State, Maryland, Washington, ND or Rutgers. So I just don't see this as a year where they are winning 10 games. I do think they will be much better, they just have a very tough schedule.

Which puts teams like Illinois at an immediate disadvantage as CFP rankings have, and always will, favor the traditional powers. They get the most press and air time. Though it's not right, I understand why. If you're a national sports analyst, writer or commentator, it's nearly impossible to know a great deal about 100+ teams in a given college sport. It's much easier to focus on traditional top 10 to 15 teams which bolsters their rankings.

They were 5th when he took over (accounting for the known Texas/OU exit). Amazing to see how he played his cards in outlasting the PAC-12 and in the process leapfrogged the ACC to potentially be viewed as an attractive alternative for CURRENT ACC schools when the other shoe ultimately drops for them.

He should get a statue in Ames, IA and Manhatten, KS. šŸ˜

I think somebody on here said it once, his only goal seems to have been to get them to be #3. Heā€™s not delusional or wasting his time fighting losing battles. Heā€™s like the rotation player who knows his role and performs it to the T.

I might have asked this before (maybe not here), does anybody have an opinion what the magic number is for the reamining "power" conferences? Will it eventually be 3 or 4? I was trying to consider it from a business perspective, not from a fan perspective. I know nothing about the entertainment industry and only had a couple marketing classes. I think about how often I have seen the phrase "Big 3" across industries. ANd now the commissionar of the Big 12 focused on decalaring they are one of the 3 top conferences. I am sure he has some interesting perspective?

Some interesting speculation that FSU, Clemson, and others might leave the ACC and join the Big 12. Thoughts?

If/when the B1G expands again, I hope we can finally get ND off their high horse and get them to join but we'll also take a long look at Kansas, UNC, FSU, UVA, Stanford, and others. If Texas A&M wants to get away from Texas, I'd happily give them a solid look too. The B1G could basically become an All American conference.

Of the potential ACC/discontented schools from other conferences/realistic options out there for the B1G I would say Texas A&M, Stanford, ND, and Duke make most sense from a TV footprint, AUU, and conference prestige sense. If ND goes to the SEC or Big 12 instead of the B1G I'd be mad. If the other schools I mentioned go to the other two conferences, I wouldn't mind. It appears at the moment that the B1G is stable. But so was the PAC-12 in 2005......
