Conference Realignment

I do think we should expect someone in the Big 10 to consider bolting for "greener" pastures. I would advocate for an 18 team league right away with the understanding that it would prob shake out to 16 by the time the dust settles. Teams to consider for me would be

Louisville
Boise State
Mizzo
KU
Boston College
Texas AM
Virginia

The reason I listed it that way is because in order to get a team from the ACC (Virginia, UNC and I’ll add Clemson and GT for you) I would think the B10 will have to first destabilize it somewhat. Otherwise the incentive for UNC or Virginia or Clemson or even GT is weaker. FSU is the domino piece because of their precarious financials which is reportedly why Jimbo Fisher left for A&M and their desirable National brand.

If you grab FSU, because of their National brand, the B10 weakens the ACC (leaves essentially one notable football team) and increases the leverage to pry away another ACC member, whomever that may be. I didn’t include Clemson because they aren’t AAU and idk that the B10 will stomach 2 more non AAU members. I didn’t include ND because they seem steadfast independent, or GT because they are a non-national brand and a non-flagship state school, in a non-contiguous state.

If you take Florida St. then the remaining ACC members, if offered a spot, will almost certainly have to take it. Because the Big10 and SEC will absolutely dwarf anything the ACC will be able to provide them.

So yeah, in summation, let’s call this move the ACC Gambit.
imo, inroads into Florida are really a prize in this

a. U Florida is a huge prize but will never happen
b. FSU is a pretty acceptable plan B , but I really have doubts they want to join our league

but I also have real doubts we really covet FSU that much . maybe I’m wrong - I hope so . I just want the B1G in Fla and they are plan b . I don’t want plan c,d or e
they were unaffiliated for all those years up until 25 years ago, so the acc is not in their blood yet like the sec is in UF .
if you can get FSU , you gotta get GTech or UNC or UVa same time or a few years later . i have no problems being at 15 for awhile , waiting for another plum to shake out

I think the BIG and SEC are the two leagues that are stable and prestigious and would not have members leaving. I assume the greener pastures are assumed to be the SEC. What is there to gain? Prestige? A wash. Academics? Ha. Money? A wash. Basketball? Ha. Football. Maybe that one. Everyone else would consider trying to get into one of those two leagues.

I agree that on paper it does not make any sense to leave, however with change in the air people do strange things for strange reasons......

Seems unlikely based on the contracts currently in place, but I suppose it's possible.

ESPN is reporting that Texas and OU would owe upward of $76 million each to leave the BIG12, but could make it official in a couple weeks. Hard to imagine they can get that much value from the switch, but the report said it would "easily affordable" with a new deal. Just shows how it's all about football. Not sure what this would mean to bball, and if more realignment is coming.

It's less we need to worry about someone leaving today and more we can't be complacent and let other conferences get ahead of us. Where last week I'd have said the SEC was our equal, now they're about to be the top dog. We can't let either the ACC or the Pac-12 find a way to move ahead of us. If so, that's when things get dicey.

You just know this would land Self back in the B1G

I get it, I felt the same way initially. The last go around it was rammed into our heads that it's about football, stupid. My counter to you is that Kansas made more money in the Big 12 off their third-tier media rights than any other school in the conference other than UT, which had the Longhorn Network. That means on the open market, their basketball program was bringing in more money than Oklahoma's football program. Would you take Oklahoma right now? I bet you would. Well apparently, you'll make yourself more money if you take Kansas. It's one of the few basketball programs that busts up the "it's a football decision" argument.
You're really stretching the truth here. Which program brought in more for the conference? That's the real question the basketball fans on here overlook.

Third tier media rights are a drop in the bucket compared to football media rights. Why try to make that as an argument?

The link someone gave with revenues per school showed the following amounts (in millions) from media rights/licensing.
KU $56.6
WVU $52.8
TT $51.9
ISU $50.9

I'm sure KU gets a lot more in licensing than any other school listed, but that doesn't get shared. So how much of that is from third tier rights?

Wow, has money and television done a number on tradition! That's all anyone cares about anymore. I quit watching pros because of this garbage and now college sports is becoming nothing but show me the $$$. How sad and tragic....

All I can say is that if Texas and Oklahoma leave the Big 12, that league is in trouble. The thing is, Kansas would undoubtedly be interested in joining the B1G in that scenario, but the B1G could have added them before, but were not willing to without them coming along with Texas or Oklahoma. Why add them now?

Reading that Kansas has a strong academic reputation, one of the better fits for the BIG.
Early word is them and Iowa State fit our conference the best and we might be able to beat Kansas in football, lol.

Personally, and thinking strictly in terms of TV markets and football/basketball kings, I would like the BIG and ACC to merge into a 28 team Thanos Endgame conference, with the following condition. No Nebraska, No Pitt. Poach KS. 5 divisions w/ rotating out of division games. We add 3 football kings in CLEM/ND/FSU and become the premier basketball conference by a mile. You also have room to add 2, first come, first serve.

ND, PU, IU, UM, OSU, MSU
WI, UI, NW, MINN, IOWA, KS
RU, MD, PSU, BC, SYR, LOUIS
UNC, NCST, DUKE, UVA, VA TECH
FSU, MIA, GATECH, CLEM, WAKE

JMHO.....

I would have a hard time justifying the inclusion of KU into the B1G solely on the criminal conduct of the basketball program and the numerous infractions that it has incurred over the years...Curtis Townsend has been alleged to be one of the biggest bagmen in NCAA history and i still remember the fight at the end of that KU-KSU game with Da sousa (sip) swinging that chair in the handicapped area of the stands.....Seems like KU has been lacking in institutional control for many years now.......

Money is the name of the game now whether it's revenue brought in by the school , revenue being allowed now to players (which seems fair in the current corrupt condition of college sports nowadays ) , but the line needs to be drawn somewhere.....The recent FBI probe and the facts coming out of that lead me to say " NO " to KU being brought into the B1G....i don't have a vote , but I do have an opinion ....a very humble opinion.....

Has the world become so greedy to sell our souls for a buck ????????????????

edit.....I hadn't read that about the SEC contacting osu and scUM and others.............$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Makes me sick to see college sports decline this way

I'm sorry for being vague. The third-tier rights were from 2013-2019. During that time, KU had deals with ESPN3, Time-Warner, and Metro Sports to broadcast their games.

In 2019, they consolidated their third-tier rights with 8 of the 10 other Big12 members. You can guess the two schools that aren't involved. The difference in the numbers in your post is specifically licensing, which yes, isn't shared.

Look, I'm not saying KU is a sure thing. I'm just saying their basketball program has a heck of a lot more legs than I considered when this thread started.
