Conference Realignment

#101
As an outsider who roots for a Big Ten team, it's easy for me to say that there isn't a gap between CAA and MAC football or to argue why the CAA would be better for them. Especially since NE really doesn't seem to care about high school or college football like the rest of the country.
But it could be as simple as a belief that to be a high profile university you need FBS football or it could be a little brother complex with BC.
Anyone have the difference in revenue distribution to the MAC vs. A10/Independent, on things like the CFP and NCAA tourney?

It's a worthwhile thing to ask I suppose, but my best guess is the enormous additional cost of FBS football makes it a net money loser any way you slice it.

The only example that springs to mind of a school deciding to stop throwing good money after bad with a joke of a football program and do what's right for the rest of its sports is UConn and look how that's going!

Sir, I was at the UConn game at Notre Dame, in November 2009. We don't speak well of UConn, it's too soon.

For one of the two 2PAC teams, here is Washington State's schedule...just to see how one of the two teams left holding the Pac-12 bag is coping.

Big drop from USC, Oregon, UCLA

I was hoping they would still qualify for automatic CFP slot as Pac12 champion but the CFP removed their slot last week. I would have gone to court (in WA or OR of course) for injuction against CFP since Pac12 is member of CFP and this was done without due process.

that’s most likely the end game
it’s always about money , and my guess is WSU & OSU are trying to keep as much of the current cash cache as they can
I am firmly convinced WSU and OSU are happy to bide as much time as possible in the hopes that the ACC breaks up sooner, rather than later.

1) Letting the rest of the PAC get out before making any decisions would seem to keep it cleaner for PAC12 assetts (Tibbs pt), both in terms of current exiting members & opportunity to clear out any cash or other assets before letting someone else join.
2) Bet there was a hope they could keep the playoff berth for 1 year, which would have been a nice windfall
3) Conference realignment has been a bit unstable, so you never know... ACC, B1G12, let the dominos fall for a year & see if anything better shakes out ...Mountain West option isn't going away

So basically the Mountain West. Why don't they just merge and take the PAC brand with them?
I think OSU and WSU struck a 2 year deal with the Mountain West for football and possibly basketball. They will play the Mountain West but won't be eligible for conference title. It gives them 2 years to work out a new conference/conference alignment.

It's an impossible line to draw, and the only people who could draw it are NCAA enforcement personnel who rightly have a public trust level of zero, even if the courts ever allow them to have jurisdiction again.

Because it really isn't just "national" deals. The funny De'Coldest Crawford local Nebraska HVAC commercial thing is very much in the spirit of "true" NIL also. Plus players selling t-shirts on Instagram or whatever. There's no legal or moral justification for stopping those activities. But there's no line to draw between that and a booster just handing over a sack with a dollar sign on it, which of course was already happening anyway, it's only the legit deals that were being stopped.

The only legally workable way for the NCAA to restrain the trade of its labor is the same way the pro leagues do: to collectively bargain with them.

That sounds easier than it is though, for a panoply of reasons.

Overall, I love the fact that the payers are now able to get a well-deserved piece of the pie.

The problem is, as you’ve alluded to in the past, that money comes from rabid fans. So what happens if the new model of college athletics (NIL + Transfer Portal) erodes interest in the sport(s)?

The money starts to dry up.

So what’s better for the players today, might be worse for the players tomorrow.

I can't wait till Illinois plays at UCLA regular season.

I am 61 and dream of seeing the Illini in the Rose Bowl. I missed 1984 due to death in family. We should have gone in 2002 but got bumped to Sugar bowl by Texas USC BCS game. I went in 2007 but we collapsed vs bad USC team. With Rose Bowl in new CFP expanded playoffs and USC, Oregon and WA joining B10 it may be next to impossible for us to play in the Jan 1 Rose Bowl.

Unfortunately, you’re probably right about a 1/1 rose bowl in the future. Will be included in playoff structure for now but my opinion is that it’ll likely be phased out entirely, or into obscurity with non-playoff teams (might have a chance then), especially with no pac-8,10,or 12. The granddaddy of them all hasn’t been for a while, and will lose even more significance over the these coming seasons.

I want to watch Rose Bowl parade, go with team to Disneyland, and attend Beef Bowl (which team eats most prime rib) at Lawrys. I always blamed Hugh Hefner for our 1984 loss because he invited the team to the Playboy mansion BEFORE the Rose Bowl instead of making it after the game if they worn.

But couldn’t the
SEC and Big make it work?

Well you kind of run into 1 out of 2 problems.

Either A. your rules restrict athlete compensation to such a degree that the best athletes don't want to play in the B1G or SEC, defeating the purpose of this entire thing, or B. you run into the same antitrust problems the NCAA has.

The Big Two might make a more sensible bargaining unit for a union, maybe?

In terms of enforcement though, forget it. It just can't be done the way the public has always demanded it be done. A clean NCAA has never existed because it was never possible.

The deal with the Mountain West is for football only. Washington State and Oregon State will compete in the West Coast Conference at least for two years in most other sports, including basketball, and be eligible for championships.

Sorry if it’s already been discussed but curious what people think about possible new names for the B1G conference, since it’s likely to change. I’ve read a lot of blogs and sports opinions saying they should just take the 10 out and become the BIG conference. I thought it would be a fun plan on words to change it officially to “The Big League” conference with BIG as logo. Would be good to invite recruits to play in “The Big League”. Anyway, anyone with any insight or opinions?
