Craig Tiley is the new head of the USTA

I attended college as Tiley started his revival of the Illinois men’s tennis program. He was Curt Cignetti before Curt Cignetti.

Still one of the best leaders I’ve ever had the privilege of interacting with, and it’s been 30 years since I was on campus (not a tennis player, but did talk with him several times at various tennis events).

When Neil Adam's was fired in 92(?), Tiley was giving private tennis lessons at Atkins. He had come to the University to pursue a PHD in sports psychology. Needing $, he started giving lessons When Adam's left, the program was in shambles. Guenther brought in Tiley as interim coach. He didn't have enough players to field a team so recruited students from campus, including a couple football players. Didn't win a single B10 match that year. Went on to build a dynasty including an undefeated national championship team . Remarkably, he did it while recruiting almost exclusively American players in a period when international players were dominating the game.
