Creighton guard Drew Cayce to walk on at Illinois

We used to have many walk-on players during the Henson era, some of the teams in the late 80s had more than 10! I recall reading that at some point Title IX caused them to throttle back because it not only looked at scholarship numbers when comparing men/women's sports, but also "participants" which included the walk-on guys. So that's why now you rarely see more than a couple on the roster.

I would have been a toddler back in the late 80s, but weren't all the walk-ons due to some scholarship restriction?

He is still on the roster, but I don't think there is a limit to the number of walk-ons. While there is a lot of info available on the scholly limit, I couldn't find anything about a roster limit, except some obscure reference to a 15 player limit on how many you can take to the NCAA championship. Also saw on another board that Kansas had 18 players on their 13/14 team (5 walk-ons). And of course a few articles about 'roster management' which specifically mentioned Crean and Pitino...
This was discussed in another thread a while ago -- maybe about the time Ryan Schmidt was added to the roster? Basically, if memory serves, there's not a set limit of walk-on spots, but no more than 15 players can be in uniform for any game.

The last Illini player from Libertyville was really good. RIP Matto.

Don't expect Cayce to have nearly the impact of a B10 champs starter, but hopefully he'll be a good team addition. Plus, his LaLu ties only help.

the first player i ever remember wearing no-show socks (or maybe he had no socks).

Right, but even a non-scholarship athlete may be required to sit out following a transfer of schools. Just because they are not on scholarship doesn't automatically make them exempt and immediately eligible. Kevin Berrardini was a walk-on transfer from Loyola Marymount to Illinois, where he was required to sit out a year, which then gave him the opportunity to transfer again (to Pace University) as a graduate student.

Yep, and that's why LaTulip sat out last year, so he could use the grad student exemption and use his final year somewhere else. If he'd been able to transfer without sitting, he could have just transferred last year.

seems likely that KB and MLT were probably recruited then; it only takes two phone calls or an off campus contact from the coach. since MLT was a preferred walk-on, that seems even more likely.

i think we're all saying the same thing. my point is that it's possible for a non-scholarship player to play without sitting. i have no idea how frequently that actually happens though; it's probably more common among lower division I schools.

i think we're all saying the same thing.

I just watched his tape. Is his release a little far forward, or is it the camera angle?

Regardless, welcome to the O&B!

I imagine it was as much about the degree & preserving his last year of elgibility as anything, he could have sat out last year at Wright State as well.

I saw him play at LaLu. Definitely has an unorthodox shooting motion, but he can shoot it.
