He and the family did not attend due to a family issue. Supposedly, the family issue was that the family was not happy the way he was used at the end of the season.

Thanks, I can imagine that would not be fun to play your whole career only to get benched at the end of the year.

Best players play. Tate's play did not warrant any PT towards the end of the season. Tejon had earned it, and played better than Tate.

He never warranted playing time. He should've averaged no more than 5 mins any of the years he was here. He played completely out of necessity.

Correct. And if John Groce takes anything away from his time at Illinois and applies it in his new role at Akron, I hope it is to get plenty of input from his staff about who should play, substitution patterns and the like. Of course, that assumes he has a staff that is capable of providing insightful and valuable assessments like that. Too much favoritism and going against the metrics by Mr. G while here. Listen more, talk less and trust your people and other experts.

My guess is that either Underwood was asking him to do or be something he can't or won't do or there is a clash of personalities. There has been a bit of time for them to get to know one another at this point. I don't know DJ or the situation, so am hesitant to proscribe any type of short-coming to the young man. It could be as simple as lack of fit. Hope he finds a place where he can excel.

+1

We don't know, and it's a chaotic situation. We do know that fit really matters to BU, and DJW has had a chance to evaluate his future here before making a decision. Best of luck to him. It's kind of sad to me that Groce's time here, and lack of success as a coach, have colored our view of the players.

And this is the conundrum for kids coming out of high school and committing to college ball. They could be a benchwarmer on a B1G team, or big-man-on-campus legend at a Div II team.

If a B1G coach comes knocking on your door and says we have a place for you, do you believe him? Surely you do. But if you're not getting playing time, it would, that's not what you came for.

Wearing that B1G jersey but not making it to the floor, or big fish/smaller pond. What would you choose?

I think that takes honest reflection and evaluation. What do I feel of my abilities? Do I truly think I can play in the B1G and do I think I can play on the specific team that I am committing to? How to I "fit" into their rotation/team?

That'd be tough. "I got the offer, so I am here to prove I belong." .......that is hard to do if you simply aren't actually good enough.

Maybe the 4 Stars that go to Duke/Kansas/UNC/Kentucky can answer that, or better yet just ask Bragg, how well that decision worked out? :chief:

Most kids want to play not watch, which is the reason there are so many transfers. Rare is the kid that sticks it out at the end of the bench for 4 yrs.

Not much left of that top 15 class of 2015. AJ and Nichols still onboard. Gone are JCL, Paul, and DJW.
