2020 Games
Game 1: Garza 25 points
Game 2: Garza 28 points

We will learn if Kofi has grown and learned any on defense tonight, I guess. Or, we just don't care and he gets what he gets

Also, over under on Chicken wing moves by Garza. I'm setting it at 3

If I'm BU, and even Kofi, Ayo, Trent...I'm in officials ear early about the Garza hook on offense....get a couple early calls and could set stage for rest of game

Most of the posts so far have been focused on how to stop him when Iowa is on offense. I think that we need to make him work when Iowa is on defense. Drive the lane. Feed Kofi. Make him work hard on defense. Maybe get him in foul trouble.
This. Send Curbelo at him early and often.

One on one (Kofi or Giorgi) with occasional "surprise" doubles every couple possessions. Our priority should be on limiting Iowa's 3 point success with the second priority trying to startle Garza with changes in the way he's defended.

As long as Illinois plays inside out on offense, we'll be working Garza hard on that end of the floor and hopefully he picks up some fouls trying to guard Kofi/Ayo at the rim.

The key is just to stick to our identity and look to improve on ourselves. If Garza scores despite us playing great defense then so be it. We need to pick what we defend and just stick to it.

Remember BU talking about discussion about defending big men with an NBA coach. Sometime during the shutdown but don’t remember the coach. Assumed at the time he was thinking about Garza. Maybe he has a plan??
Would use the Bobby Starnes method on him but you need to be an old timer to remember him. The man he guarded would be all bruises from the elbow down by the end of the game.

Obviously, there is no easy way and Kofi definitely can help down low, but the concern with Kofi is can he keep up with Garza outside? Also, we semi lost to Baylor somewhat easily because Kofi got in foul trouble. I think my first move would be to be aggressive against Garza on the other end. Defensively, besides some of the wonderful suggestions is to throw a variety of looks of hesitation to double. Many times, Garza will pass out quickly if he sees a double. If he does not, he will put the ball down which deserves the double then. Our issue is size compared last year. Doubling Garza means we leave Kofi in a position to where he does not rebound as easily and also don't have Feliz this year to get those boards. Garza feasts on opportunity baskets so when Kofi is in and if possible try not to truly double unless he puts ball on floor, but when Giorgi is in, we may need to use Monte at the 3 (with either Hawkins/grandison at 4 to have size) to help with boards. Sag off Connor McCaffrey too if he is at the 3 point lane. In all honesty, if Garza starts throwing those elbows for position, sell it without a flop. Hopefully, Kofi can have learned from last year on that.

I think this game will be determined outside of foul trouble on Kofi by who attacks the most. If we attack them on offense and make them work, I think we win. If we hit a lull, or play just 2 man ball while struggling on defensive rebounding, we lose.
