Doug is one of my favorites, so I'm really glad to hear this.
He carried the team on his back through some rough spots.
Altenberger -- yes!! Love this guy. I've been rooting for him to make a return to IL basketball.

My idol. My contemporary. A great ILLINI analyst. A fantastic ILLINI player. 1984 Elite Eight. Loved that team!!! And he played with my namesake, Efrem.

GO ILLINI!

Altenberger is not a great announcer. But, man, what a player!

Glad to have both him & Deon on board.

I never minded Doug when he did ESPN plus tv commentary for the Illini. It's a good thing for sure! This is the A-team of announcers.

I always enjoyed listening to Altenberger. I would expect his Illini radio coverage will be different that what the ESPN TV was. He has no need to look impartial. And I don't mind an analyst that is critical when it's warranted.

it wasn't that he was critical I like that myself it was that he never would say the good trying to not be a homer

If you never saw Altenberger play this is a good game to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFp7u2R6uL4

(vs. Georgia Tech in 1985 NCAAs)

One of my all-time favorite players. Great shooter. Tremendous defensive player. Big heart. He'd probably shoot 50% from today's three point line.

Altenberger was awesome in that game!

You couldn't have chosen a much better game to showcase the year-in and year-out expectations I have for our program. We were pre-season #2 that year behind Patrick Ewing & Georgetown ---- and got knocked out in the third round (Sweet 16) of the NCAA tournament by a really good Georgia Tech team. As such, we considered it a really bad year. Yep, a disappointing season being in Final 16. Lou was an absolute recruiting juggernaut in the 80's!

Was a huge fan of Dougie A. back in the day. Great to see him back in Illini Nation on an official basis.

As am I, named one of my boys after him. Doug let me know it was a great honor to him that I had done that. My son in turn now holds the three point record at his high school. Love our Illini :hailtotheorange:
