High school hoops holiday tournaments

#1
This is one of my favorite weeks of the year as I try to make it to a few high school holiday tournaments. I grew up at the Pekin Holiday tournament and would say that from the age of 5 to 25 I only missed games when I was playing and our coaches said we couldn't just hang out at the tournament and talk to the other schools cheerleaders all day. Life has taken me to the Chicago burbs so I don't get back home often, and this new job has me working this week (should have thought that out when negotiating Vacation time), but planning on getting to a few games these next few days.. Will hit Plano to see the kid going to Duke and Peoria Notre Dame, but open to suggestions on other must see venues if anyone is willing to share and discuss.

Down south it was always the Eldorado Holiday tourney for me.....McLeansboro , what is now Hamilton County , has been it that tourney for forever......

Also , the Centralia tourney was a big one bringing in a lot of out of state teams....

Aww man where do I start. The Big Dipper at Rich South is always a good one. I saw Ayo go nuts a few years back, he got hurt and then Adam Miller had about 35 in the first half. I believe that Simeon goes to Pontiac every year. That is usually a good one. Usually all of the good teams go to Proviso West . If you want a road trip, Centralia is over 3 hours away from the city but it is a good old small town and usually good teams go there. This is a preview from the Chicago Sun Times.

Right now WFIW.com is getting ready to broadcast the Fairfield game. Not sure if they are doing all games. You might check WRUL.com too

thanks for both posts Gman........I found the schedule and found plenty of listed radio stations but none were broadcasting the entire tourney....Thats what I'm looking for ....a blanket coverage of it........down here in Paducah , the regular over the air radio broadcasts don't reach me ....

I'm gonna try WMCL-FM , Mactowns radio station for the Foxes game ....hope it works...........

I'm headed out to Plano as one of my childhood best friends has his kid playing there. Thought about going to the Big Dipper to watch Thornton, but the pull of the Far west burbs best burger at the Bristol Tap pulled me that direction.

Eldorado tourney used to be the big draw in southern illinois. Too much eldorado home cooking chased off better programs like Cairo, Pinkneyville , Benton etc. Still some good teams played there lately. The 2013 Harrisburg State Champion . 2015 ?Owensboro KY state Champion to name a couple. But the atmosphere of small town basketball and a homecoming feel is what sets Eldorado apart. I've yet to attend another tourney that gets as raucous as this one.

Yep.............the court being so much lower than the outside streets means a great sounding game and the lighting is great also......dimmed seating for the fans made it a nice place to play ........Southern Illinois BB at it's best ........I had court side seats when the Foxes won the holiday tourney in our undefeated season of 1984..........Good memories.................

They do serve a mean burger at the Bristol Tap. I think Ottawa used to have a fun holiday tournament when my brother was playing -mid 80s. No clue if it's still a thing. Was a really cool gym to watch games.

that was a heck o a team. I remmeber they went to Evansville and played Bosse which was ranked number 1 in Indiana (all class in 1) Mcleansboro beat them by 1 or 2 and Sloan Bloacked a a shot at the buzzer ...Radio guy said he came out of nowhere

Anyone know how to find scores from Peoria area tournaments? Our local paper ( Peoria Journal Star ) quit publishing high school scores over a year ago. Tried IHSA Score zone without success. Someone told me there's an App, but I don't know what it is.

A lot of the tournaments have apps with scores.

I'm following most of the Tournaments I'm interested in on Twitter. Some of them nearly give a play by play...others only update at end of quarters and games.

But if you aren't already on Twitter, I suggest staying off of it for your sanity.

My childhood best friend's kid is playing on Herrin at Eldorado and scored his first varsity points as a freshman. He texted me video of it. Pretty cool little venue there.
