Illinois high school basketball is simply the purest form of roundball around. Coaches that are dedicated to their schools and young men. Players who learn and practice the great fundamentals of the game like passing and teamwork and how to shoot free throws(!). Playing for the pride of school and community and for team. Cities and towns that briefly forget their other loyalties and concerns and who come together for one shared joyous purpose. The NBA has become a big-business cult of show biz, large egos, massive contracts, soap-opera story lines, and ‘load-management’ with too many games on the regular season schedule. College ball is now somewhere in the middle... still with the same pride of school and legacy but infused with monetary and player-movement and commercial concerns. It takes real flesh-and-blood people and hard work to keep a great tournament tradition going generation after generation. This year’s IHSA tournaments have been the best in many years... a testament to everyone involved in putting on this annual classic. Coach Underwood was at the tournament. And while doing his coachey-stuff like evaluating talent and game strategies... he had to be impressed by a well-run event that makes the State of Illinois and the floor of the Illini proud.
