Illini All-Star Simulation

PG-Deron Williams ($4)
SG-Frank Williams ($2)
SF-Nick Anderson ($5)
PF-Roger Powell ($2)
C-Meyers Leonard ($2)

I originally drafted Brandon Paul at SG for $1, but I had a $1 left over and didn't value Ken Norman or Derek Holcombe over my current selections at PF and C... so I guess we get Frank!

Another ridiculous ones is:
PG-Dee Brown ($5)
SG-Frank Williams ($2)
SF-Kenny Battle ($1)
PF-Deon Thomas ($5)
C-Meyers Leonard ($2)

Wow, this is fun.

Honestly, I think if we were to just replay that game we'd win. They were absolutely loaded, too, with what, 4 lottery picks?

Anyway, I look at these exercises, and without a 6th/7th man, it's hard to take them seriously. Also, I think there's no way to really value a team's heart. 2005 on paper was a great team, but how do you explain just how incredibly great they were? Hearts of Champions

Setting that aside (plus who coaches them), I think I'd make some painful choices and go with, strictly based on value,

$2 Frankie
$4 Deron
$5 Nick
$2 Roger
$2 Meyers

My reasoning is that 3 of those 5 were, in addition to being all-time great players, were great competitors (Deron, Nick, Roger). And Frankie, while enigmatic at times, I think would work very well with that much talent and competitive fire on the team with him. Meyers is a bit of an outlier, but he was much better defensively his second year than people give him credit for. Yeah he got lost at times, but his athleticism and sheer height/length really made it hard to attack the paint. With a guy like Roger there, he would provide help, and with May undersized, I think would make it hard for them. It's easy to argue the flipside, that they could drive on us or Meyers too would have foul trouble, but I would take that roster.

Here's a fun minigame for this fantasy game: which player is the biggest bargain on this list?

My vote goes to Kenny Battle for a single George. Honorable mention to Miles Lænnard.

But, what happens when they fantasy pick Jordan, Worthy, etc.?

Jordan - jr year - 19.6 points, 5.3 reb and 2.1 assists and 1.6 stls, 55% fg
Anderson - so. year - 18.0 points, 7.9 reb and 2.0 assists and 1.6 stls, 54% fg

G – Deron Williams (4)
G – Demetri McCamey (1)
SF – Nick Weatherspoon (4)
PF – Deon Thomas (5)
C – Nnanna Egwu (1)

Two great assist men in Williams and McCamey, high scorers in Weatherspoon and Thomas, and our two best shot blockers in history with Thomas and Egwu. Might be a bit of an old school team, but I'd love to see them play together.

Frank Williams $2
Kendall Gill $4
Eddie Johnson $3
Brian Cook $4
Meyers Leonard $2

I want length to defend in the post with Cook and Leonard. Cook can stretch the floor and I like having Frank for $2, they're so versatile. Gill and Johnson can shoot and provide good defense / length on the perimeter.

Surprised Egwu isn't being thrown around more for $1 to lockdown Sean May.
Sean May would draw five fouls on Egwu in five possessions (but that would be true of any defender if we had to use the same crew that officiated the title game).

PG: Deron (4)
SG: Dee (5)
SF: Battle (1)
PF: Cook (4)
C: Egwu (1)

Rationale: I would love to see Dee/Deron on the court together again, thus the desire to build the team around them. Reading the comments on The Champaign Room, looks like a lot of chatter about Frankie and Battle being the steals of the list. Personally, Deron not being $5 makes him the biggest steal on the list in my opinion. I thought about pairing Deron with McCamey and building an offensive juggernaut around them, but there just doesn't seem to be much worth spending up for at the 5 (making me think Egwu is the play there). Also, Kenny Battle really does feel like a super steal at only $1. So with $2 spent at the 3 and 5, might as well pair Dee/Deron and go with long-time NBAer Brian Cook at the 4.

1-Frank Williams (2)
2-Deron Williams (4)
3-Hill(2)
4-Thomas(5)
5-Egwu(1)

with a dollar to spair..I think Frank/Deron backcourt would be deadly, and defensivley Egwu is the best 5 defender that has come through in Illinois history and would match up well with Mays. Had to take Malcolm on the wing, we have the 1st and 3rd all-time scorers. yep.

Interesting first take is the 2005 team breaks the $15 barrier Dee -$5, Deron - $4, Luther - $2, Powell - $2, Augustine $5 = $18
Deron is a steal at $4, Frank a steal at $2,
Nick Anderson -$5
Kenny Battle - $1
Take Norman for Center at $3

Anderson and Battle are the same position, can only take one. Norman is a PF, not a C, but you could swap Battle for Egwu for a valid lineup!

I think we need Efrem's muscle against Sean May.

But those positions are bogus, Anderson/Battle both started at the same time for the flying illini & Battle was the 4. Same for Dee/Deron/Luther all starting on the same 2005 team even though they all are listed as PG/SG. Norman is stretching my memory, but seems like he played the 4/5 for us. Looking at 86-87 roster the only players listed as Centers are Kujawa & Blab and they averaged 9 minutes between them, so I'm calling him a center. And George Montgomery was the center/Efrem was the power Forward.
